Leon Battista Alberti’s move from Florence back to Rome in 1443 is commonly used as the starting point for De re aedificatoria. In Rome he studied ancient buildings closely and focused on writing in Latin, which shaped the treatise’s classical tone and scholarly style.

The first printed edition (the editio princeps) of De re aedificatoria appeared in Florence on 1485-12-29, printed by Nicolaus Laurentii (Niccolò di Lorenzo) “Alamanus.” Printing transformed the treatise from a limited manuscript text into a reproducible reference work, accelerating its spread across Europe.
Bibliographic descriptions of the 1485 edition frequently identify it as the earliest printed treatise devoted to architecture. In 1546, Pietro Lauro published the first Italian (vernacular) translation, titled I dieci libri de l’architettura. Translating Alberti from Latin into Italian widened the audience beyond humanist scholars to include more practitioners and readers who worked primarily in the vernacular.
In 1550, Cosimo Bartoli published a new Italian version in Florence that became more influential than Lauro’s earlier translation. Its editorial presentation and illustrations made the treatise easier to consult and helped shape how later readers—especially architects—understood Alberti’s arguments about proportion, ornament, and civic building.

In 1966, a major modern edition was published in Milan by Il Polifilo, with a critical Latin text and an Italian translation by Giovanni Orlandi, introduced and annotated by Paolo Portoghesi. On 1988-10-13, The MIT Press published On the Art of Building in Ten Books, translated by Joseph Rykwert with Neil Leach and Robert Tavernor.
