The Pitsa panels (painted wooden votive tablets from Corinthia) are among the earliest surviving Greek panel paintings. Although Archaic rather than Classical, they provide crucial technical and material evidence (wood support with painted imagery) for later Classical traditions where originals rarely survive.
The defeat of the Persian invasion and the subsequent rise of Athens mark the conventional beginning of the Classical period (often dated from 480 BCE). This era produced celebrated panel painters and major mural programs known largely through literary testimony and a few exceptional archaeological survivals.
The Tomb of the Diver (near Paestum/Poseidonia in southern Italy) preserves rare Greek-style figured wall painting (symposium scenes and the famous diver on the ceiling). Dated to about 470 BCE, it is often cited as the only extant Greek wall-painting program with figured scenes from the Orientalizing/Archaic/Classical span to survive substantially intact, offering vital evidence for techniques and iconography otherwise known from texts and later copies.
The Stoa Poikile (“Painted Stoa”), built in the 460s BCE in the Athenian Agora, became a landmark for public display of large-scale paintings on panels/tablets. Ancient sources associate its paintings with leading artists including Polygnotus and Micon, indicating the prestige and civic role of monumental painting in mid-5th-century Athens.
Polygnotus of Thasos (c. 500–440 BCE) was famed in antiquity for large compositions (notably at Delphi) that helped define a severe Classical style and new compositional strategies. Though lost, his renown shows how wall painting and panel painting were central to Classical visual culture despite poor survival.
Ancient tradition credits Apollodorus of Athens (late 5th century BCE) with innovations in skiagraphia (shadow-painting/shading), a technical development that later authors treated as pivotal for naturalism in Greek painting. This matters because surviving Classical paintings are scarce, so technical progress is often reconstructed through such testimonia and later emulative media (e.g., mosaics).
Ancient writers (notably Pliny the Elder) preserved stories about painters such as Zeuxis and Parrhasius and their contest of illusionism (grapes and the painted curtain). While anecdotal and difficult to date precisely, these accounts are important evidence for Classical expectations around verisimilitude and technical bravura in panel and wall painting.
In the later 4th century BCE, Macedonian elite and royal contexts preserve exceptional evidence for large-scale painting. The Vergina (Aigai) royal tombs are central to this record, showing that major mural programs existed in the Greek world even if most have perished.
The wall painting of Hades abducting Persephone in Tomb I at Vergina (often called the “Tomb of Persephone”) dates to the second half of the 4th century BCE (commonly placed around the mid-to-late 300s BCE). It is among the most important survivals for Classical Greek/Macedonian mural painting, providing rare evidence for large-scale figural painting, movement, and color handling close to the end of the Classical period.
Apelles of Kos, active in the later 4th century BCE and associated by ancient testimony with Alexander the Great, was celebrated by Pliny as surpassing other painters. Although his paintings are lost, his prominence underscores the high status of wood panel painting at the end of the Classical era and the reliance on literary sources to reconstruct its history.
Late 4th-century BCE pebble mosaics at Pella (including the signed Stag Hunt by Gnosis) demonstrate how mosaic floors could echo painterly effects such as shading (skiagraphia) and complex figural modeling. These works are important indirect evidence for lost panel and mural painting practices and pictorial ambitions in the Classical-to-early-Hellenistic transition.
The death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE is the conventional endpoint for “Classical Greece” and the transition into the Hellenistic period. For painting, this boundary is significant because much of what survives materially (or through later Roman copying) tends to be Hellenistic or Roman, while Classical masterpieces on wood panels and walls are mostly known through description, later adaptations, and a few exceptional finds.
The Alexander Mosaic from Pompeii (a Roman work usually dated to around 100 BCE) is widely believed to copy a late 4th- or early 3rd-century BCE Greek painting (attributed in scholarship to Philoxenus of Eretria or Apelles). Though outside Classical Greece chronologically, it is a key conduit for reconstructing the look and ambition of late Classical/early Hellenistic monumental painting on panels.
