Athens transferred the Delian League’s treasury from Delos to Athens, giving the city far greater control over shared funds. This shift helped finance Pericles’ large rebuilding program on the Acropolis after earlier destruction in the Persian Wars. It set the economic and political conditions for building the Parthenon on an unprecedented scale.
Under the statesman Pericles, Athens began a coordinated rebuilding program on the Acropolis to express civic pride, religious devotion, and imperial power. The Parthenon was planned as the centerpiece—both a major shrine to Athena and a treasury connected to Athenian leadership. The program tied art, architecture, and politics into a single public message.
Work on the Parthenon began in 447 BCE, led by architects Ictinus and Callicrates, with the sculptor Phidias overseeing the overall artistic program. The building used Pentelic marble and combined Doric architecture with Ionic elements, creating a carefully designed visual effect. From the start, architecture and sculpture were planned as a unified whole.
Inscribed building accounts document early work such as cutting marble, transporting stone, and improving the route from Mount Pentelikon to Athens. These records show the Parthenon as a major public works project with organized oversight, wages, and materials tracking. They also help modern researchers reconstruct how the temple was built year by year.
The Parthenon’s 92 metopes (rectangular relief panels above the outer columns) were carved by multiple artists and installed early in the decoration sequence. They showed mythic battles—Greeks versus Amazons, Centaurs, Giants, and Trojans—often read as symbolic parallels to Greek victories over Persia. Their high-relief style made them highly visible from outside the temple.
An Ionic frieze (a continuous sculpted band) ran around the upper walls of the inner building, a striking choice for an otherwise Doric temple. It is widely interpreted as showing the Panathenaic procession, in which Athenians honored Athena and presented a new woven peplos (robe). This placed civic ritual—ordinary citizens and their city—at the heart of the monument’s imagery.
By 438 BCE the building itself was completed, and the Parthenon was dedicated to Athena even as some decorative work continued. This milestone made the temple usable for religious and civic purposes while finishing touches were still underway. It also marked a public success for Pericles’ building program.
In 438 BCE a monumental cult statue of Athena Parthenos, made by Phidias, was dedicated inside the temple. The statue was chryselephantine—constructed with gold and ivory over a core—making it both a religious image and a display of wealth. Its removable gold elements also meant the statue could function as a form of stored value in times of crisis.
The large pediments (triangular spaces at the roof ends) were among the last areas to receive sculpture, roughly 437–432 BCE. They depicted key Athenian myths: Athena’s birth (east) and her contest with Poseidon for control of Attica (west). These scenes linked the city’s identity and territory directly to its patron goddess.
Work on the Parthenon’s exterior decoration continued until about 432 BCE. This late phase overlapped with rising tensions that soon erupted into the Peloponnesian War, changing Athens’ priorities and finances. The timing helps explain why the temple can be both a peak of artistic confidence and a monument built at the edge of a major conflict.
The Parthenon: Construction and Sculpture Program (447–432 BCE)
