By the early-to-mid 5th century BCE, the Severe Style (Early Classical) is generally dated to about 490–450 BCE. It is characterized by simplified forms, heavier drapery, more credible anatomy, and serious expressions—bridging Archaic conventions and later Classical norms.
During Xerxes’ invasion, Athens was captured and major sanctuaries on the Acropolis were damaged. The postwar rebuilding context helped set the stage for new artistic aims associated with the Severe Style (more naturalistic bodies, restrained expressions).
The marble Angelitos Athena (Acropolis Museum inv. 140) is dated roughly 480–470 BCE and is often cited as an early Severe Style work, showing the move away from the Archaic smile toward a more sober, monumental presence.
The Kritios Boy (Acropolis Museum inv. 698), dated after 480 BCE, is a hallmark of Severe Style sculpture. It is widely discussed for its more convincing body structure and early use of a weight shift that anticipates later contrapposto.
The bronze Charioteer of Delphi, commonly dated c. 478–474 BCE, is a key Severe Style survival. Its calm, controlled presence and restrained facial expression exemplify early Classical ideals developing in the decades after the Persian Wars.
A new bronze group of Harmodios and Aristogeiton (the Tyrannicides), attributed to Kritios and Nesiotes, was erected in 477/476 BCE after the earlier monument had been taken by the Persians. The commission is closely tied to the Severe Style moment in Athenian public art.
Work began on the Temple of Zeus at Olympia around 470 BCE. Its sculptural program (pediments and metopes) is often treated as one of the fullest, most influential realizations of Severe Style aesthetics in architectural sculpture.
The over-life-size Artemision Bronze (identity debated: Zeus or Poseidon) is commonly dated to around c. 460 BCE (some sources place it mid-5th century). Its dynamic pose and anatomical rendering make it a cornerstone example of Severe Style bronze sculpture.
Myron’s Discobolus (Discus Thrower), known through Roman copies, is typically dated to 460–450 BCE. It is often described as rooted in the Severe Style, combining detailed anatomy with an emotionally impassive face.
The Riace Bronzes (two full-size warrior statues) are commonly dated to 460–450 BCE. They show the technical mastery of large-scale bronze casting and the evolving Early Classical interest in credible musculature, stance, and restrained expression.
The Temple of Zeus at Olympia is generally given a completion date of 456 BCE (within the broader construction span 470–456 BCE). The temple’s sculptural decoration helped set a benchmark for Severe Style narrative, anatomy, and emotional restraint.
Around 450 BCE, Severe Style conventions increasingly give way to the fuller naturalism and idealization of the later 5th century BCE. Museum summaries commonly treat 450 BCE as an approximate endpoint for the Severe Style as a distinct phase.
