In 71 CE, Vespasian and his son Titus celebrated a triumph in Rome for victory in Judaea. The triumph and its spoils became a key political message: the dynasty could bring military success and order. Flavian monuments later echoed this message through relief sculpture and prominent urban locations.
After the capture of Jerusalem, Vespasian vowed a major new complex centered on the Temple of Peace (Templum Pacis), sometimes called the Forum of Vespasian. Ancient authors connect it to the end of the Jewish War and the end of the recent civil strife. The project set the tone for Flavian “rebuilding” that linked imperial power with peace and public benefit.
Vespasian began building the Flavian Amphitheatre (the Colosseum) sometime between 70 and 72 CE. It was placed on the drained lake of Nero’s Golden House complex, turning former imperial private space into a massive public venue. This choice made the building a clear statement about a new political era.
The Temple of Peace complex was dedicated in 75 CE. It functioned as a monumental public precinct with porticoes and art displays, and ancient and modern sources associate it with war spoils from Judaea. The dedication helped anchor a new Flavian building axis near the Roman Forum and the future route of later imperial fora.
In 80 CE, a major fire struck Rome during Titus’s reign and damaged many buildings and neighborhoods. The destruction created practical rebuilding needs and also opportunities for imperial planning. Later, Domitian would present large-scale restoration and new construction as part of his rule.
In 80 CE, Titus officially dedicated the Colosseum, marking it as a finished and usable public monument even as later work continued. Ancient accounts describe extended inaugural games, highlighting the amphitheatre’s role as a stage for imperial generosity. The building became a defining symbol of Flavian Rome.
After Titus died in 81 CE, Domitian became emperor and pursued a wide program of restoration and new construction. Ancient testimony emphasizes that he repaired fire-damaged monuments and added major new projects. Building at Rome’s center helped Domitian link himself to recovery, order, and lasting imperial presence.
Soon after 81 CE, an honorific arch was built to commemorate the deified Titus and the Flavian victory in Judaea. Its reliefs show a triumphal procession with sacred objects taken from Jerusalem, tying the dynasty’s legitimacy to a specific military success. The arch’s placement near the Roman Forum ensured constant visibility in civic and ceremonial routes.
In 82 CE, Domitian completed work on the Colosseum by adding the uppermost story. This final phase helped maximize seating capacity and finalized the amphitheatre’s exterior silhouette. The completion reinforced the idea that Flavian rule delivered large, durable public infrastructure.
Domitian initiated a new imperial forum in a narrow strip between existing monumental complexes, later known as the Forum of Nerva (or Forum Transitorium). Ancient sources credit Domitian with building “the forum which now bears the name of Nerva,” even though it would be dedicated after Domitian’s death. The project shows how Flavian building extended the ceremonial center of Rome by linking older fora into a continuous monumental zone.
Domitian was assassinated in 96 CE, ending the Flavian dynasty. After his death, the Roman Senate pursued damnatio memoriae (official condemnation) against him, shaping how some of his projects were credited and remembered. This political reversal helps explain why buildings planned or started under Domitian could be publicly reframed under later emperors.
In 97 CE, Emperor Nerva dedicated the Forum of Nerva, completing a project begun under Domitian. The forum’s long, corridor-like plan reflected the cramped space available in Rome’s crowded center, while still presenting a richly decorated ceremonial route. Its dedication marked a clear closing point for the Flavian-era reshaping of the city center (69–96 CE), because it finalized one of the last major building initiatives launched under the Flavians.
