During the Franco-Prussian War, Durand-Ruel went to London and opened a gallery there, building a wider network beyond France. This contact helped turn his interest into direct support for what would soon be called Impressionism.
In 1871, Durand-Ruel began exhibiting and acquiring works by Monet and Pissarro, taking a risk on artists who were not yet widely accepted. These early purchases helped keep the artists working when sales were uncertain. The dealer’s strategy depended on holding stock long-term and creating demand through exhibitions.
In 1872, Durand-Ruel made a widely noted purchase of Édouard Manet’s paintings, treating a controversial modern painter as an artist worth serious investment. This kind of large, concentrated buying was unusual for the time and helped Durand-Ruel build influence as a dealer. It also connected the Impressionists to a broader modern-art circle that included Manet.
In April 1874, the artists later called the Impressionists held an independent exhibition in Nadar’s former studio in Paris. The show helped define the movement publicly, even though many critics mocked the work. Durand-Ruel was not the organizer, but this event created the group identity he would help promote through his gallery system.
Durand-Ruel hosted the second Impressionist exhibition in his Paris premises at 11 rue Le Peletier. Providing space for the group helped keep the independent exhibition project alive at a time when official Salon recognition was limited. By 1882, internal disagreements made the Impressionist group exhibitions harder to organize. In 1883, Durand-Ruel organized a solo exhibition of Claude Monet’s work, part of a broader strategy of giving individual artists focused shows. This approach helped build an artist’s brand and made it easier for buyers to understand a painter’s style and development. It also reduced reliance on group exhibitions, which were becoming less stable.
In 1886, Durand-Ruel brought a major selection of Impressionist paintings to New York, presenting the movement to a broader American public. The exhibition helped open a market where wealthy collectors were increasingly willing to buy modern French art. This shift mattered because it gave Durand-Ruel a path to recover financially while keeping faith with artists whose French sales were slow.
In 1887, Durand-Ruel opened a permanent gallery in New York, turning occasional American exhibitions into an ongoing sales base. The gallery helped connect French studios, Paris stockrooms, and American collectors through regular displays and client relationships. This was a practical step in making Impressionism an international, not just Parisian, market.
In 1905, Durand-Ruel mounted a very large Impressionist exhibition in London at the Grafton Galleries, displaying hundreds of works. Even with limited immediate sales, the show helped legitimize Impressionism for British audiences and encouraged international collectors to see it as a major modern movement. This reflected a long-term strategy: build prestige through scale and visibility, then let demand follow.
Durand-Ruel’s Paris gallery continued staging exhibitions into the early 1900s, showing how dealer-driven promotion became a normal part of the modern art system. By 1914, the outbreak of World War I disrupted European travel, trade, and cultural exchange, sharply limiting the kind of international exhibition circuit Durand-Ruel had relied on.
