After rejection from the official Paris Salon, Camille Pissarro showed work at the 1863 Salon des Refusés, part of the wider push by independent-minded artists to find exhibition routes outside academic juries.
Pissarro settled in Louveciennes (northwest of Paris), a setting that catalyzed sustained attention to village roads, orchards, and fields—subjects central to his rural production in the years that followed.
During the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), Pissarro fled to London with his family; this disruption—and the later discovery that many earlier works were destroyed—shaped the urgency of his postwar restart and his reliance on cooperative networks.
After returning to Louveciennes in June 1871, Pissarro found his home and studio ransacked and many works ruined, prompting a determined rebuilding phase that soon converged with the Impressionists’ cooperative ambitions.
In March 1872, dealer Paul Durand-Ruel began purchasing Pissarro’s work, helping stabilize the artist’s finances and supporting the continued production of rural landscapes and peasant scenes around Pontoise and its environs.
In April 1872 Pissarro relocated with his family to Pontoise, beginning a long, highly productive period focused on the surrounding countryside—roads, fields, riverbanks, and working rural life—that became foundational to his “rural series” identity.
On Pissarro’s suggestion, the group formed a joint-stock cooperative (the Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, etc.); the charter was signed 27 December 1873, formalizing a practical alternative to the Salon system.
The First Impressionist Exhibition opened at Nadar’s studio (35 boulevard des Capucines) on 15 April 1874. Pissarro exhibited multiple works, aligning his rural motifs with the group’s public bid for independence.
For the Third Impressionist Exhibition (April 1877), Pissarro served on the organizing committee with Gustave Caillebotte and Auguste Renoir—illustrating his sustained commitment to cooperative, artist-run exhibitions.
At the Fifth Impressionist Exhibition (opening 1 April 1880, 10 rue des Pyramides), Pissarro continued showing with the group even as participation fractured—underscoring his role as a consistent cooperative exhibitor across all eight shows.
After relocating in 1884 to Éragny (near the River Epte), Pissarro used the village as a principal base for extensive rural subject matter—fields, labor, and seasonal change—supporting the long arc of his rural series into the 1890s.
In October 1885, Pissarro met Georges Seurat (introduced via colleagues including Signac/Guillaumin) and began a sustained, experimental turn toward divisionism/Neo-Impressionism—a technical shift that he applied to rural subjects.
In May–June 1886, Pissarro helped bring Seurat and Signac into the Eighth (final) Impressionist Exhibition, linking the cooperative Impressionist framework to emerging Neo-Impressionist practice at a key transitional moment.
In 1892, Durand-Ruel organized a major exhibition devoted to Pissarro’s work; accounts emphasize that it marked a turning point in reception and sales, with rural scenes central to the presentation.
