Komnenian rebuilding sets stage for later cycles
Labels: Maria Doukaina, Komnenian rebuilding, Chora churchIn the late 11th century, the Chora monastery church was rebuilt under the patronage of Maria Doukaina, creating the main Middle Byzantine structure that later decorators would reuse and expand. This rebuilding is often dated to about 1077–1081 and established much of the building footprint later covered by mosaics and frescoes. It provides the architectural base for the major 14th-century mural and mosaic program now associated with the site.
