Emperor Basil I’s Nea Ekklesia (“New Church”) was completed in 880 in the Great Palace of Constantinople. Reported as a five-domed church, it is widely treated as a key courtly prototype influencing later cross-in-square planning and its multi-domed variants.
Around 920, the Myrelaion church in Constantinople (later the Bodrum Mosque) was constructed as a palace chapel associated with Romanos I Lekapenos. It is an important, early Constantinopolitan cross-in-square example, helping define the type’s mature Middle Byzantine articulation of domes, vaults, and supports.
At Hosios Loukas in central Greece, the earlier church in the complex (Panagia) was built in the 10th century and is identified as the oldest cross-in-square example in Greece, illustrating the type’s spread and localization beyond Constantinople.

The Hosios Loukas katholikon (often dated to the early 11th century) exemplifies a major variant related to cross-in-square planning: the domed-octagon scheme with eight supports. Its influential, richly decorated interior helped set standards for Middle Byzantine monumental church design in Greece.
Nea Moni on Chios, founded under Constantine IX Monomachos, saw its katholikon inaugurated in 1049 (with the complex finished by 1055). Although its plan is an “insular” octagonal type rather than standard cross-in-square, it is central to understanding regional Middle Byzantine plan experimentation alongside the cross-in-square mainstream.
The katholikon at Daphni (commonly dated around 1080) represents a refined Middle Byzantine church with a compact domed plan closely related to cross-in-square solutions. Together with Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni, it anchors the study of 11th-century Greek regional expressions and high-quality mosaic programs.
By the 10th–12th centuries, the cross-in-square had become the most common Byzantine church plan, valued for its clear nine-bay spatial logic and efficient dome support on four columns or piers—features well suited to provincial and urban contexts across the empire.
Studenica Monastery’s principal church was completed around 1190 under Stefan Nemanja. While developed within the Serbian medieval context, it demonstrates the broader diffusion of Byzantine architectural vocabulary, including cross-in-square-derived spatial concepts, into the western Balkans.
At Hilandar on Mount Athos, King Milutin replaced the late 12th-century katholikon in 1303 with a new triconch church (Athonite-monastic adaptation of the cross-in-square) with narthex. This reflects how liturgical practice and monastic institutions shaped enduring regional variants.
The Church of the Holy Apostles in Thessaloniki was built under Patriarch Nephon I’s patronage (often given as 1310–1314) as a complex, five-domed tetrastyle cross-in-square with ambulatory/peristyle. It illustrates mature late Byzantine elaboration of the type in a major regional center.
