On July 16, 1054, papal legates placed a bull of excommunication on the altar in Hagia Sophia during a dispute with Patriarch Michael I Cerularius. While East–West tensions had built for centuries, this episode became a lasting symbol of the split between the Latin West and Greek East. The event linked Hagia Sophia’s sacred space to a wider realignment in medieval Christianity.
In 1204, Crusader forces captured and sacked Constantinople, and Hagia Sophia was converted to a Roman Catholic (Latin) cathedral under the Latin Empire. This change altered the building’s administration, liturgy, and political meaning, as Western rulers claimed the city and its chief church. The period also brought loss and disruption to Constantinople’s religious and artistic life.
In 1261, Byzantine rule returned to Constantinople, and Hagia Sophia was restored to Eastern Orthodox use. Around this time, the Deesis mosaic (Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist) was created in the upper galleries, reflecting a renewed Orthodox identity and a later Byzantine artistic style. The mosaic’s emotional realism is often associated with the broader cultural revival of the Palaiologan period.
In the 14th century, major earthquakes again damaged Hagia Sophia, continuing a long pattern of seismic stress and repair. These disruptions required repeated interventions to keep the dome and supporting arches standing. By this time, the building’s fabric had become a layered record of both ambition and vulnerability—an important backdrop to its final centuries as a Byzantine cathedral.
On May 29, 1453, the Ottoman capture of Constantinople ended Hagia Sophia’s role as the primary cathedral of the Byzantine Empire. Soon after the conquest, Mehmed II converted the building into a mosque, beginning a new phase of alterations and use beyond the scope of this timeline. The 1453 transition is the clear endpoint for Hagia Sophia’s medieval Byzantine construction and decorative program.
In January 532, the Nika Riots in Constantinople led to major fires and destruction, including the burning of the earlier (Theodosian) Hagia Sophia church. The disaster created both the need and the political opening for Emperor Justinian I to commission a larger, more monumental replacement on the same site. This moment sets the stage for the 6th-century building that survives today.
A series of earthquakes in the 550s weakened the building’s structure. In 558, the main dome partially collapsed, damaging important liturgical furnishings inside. The failure exposed limits in the first dome’s design (it was relatively low and pushed outward strongly), forcing a major rebuilding rather than a simple repair.
In the 8th century, Byzantine Iconoclasm (state-backed opposition to religious images) affected church decoration across the empire. In Hagia Sophia, figural imagery was removed, covered, or avoided, and non-figural symbols like crosses became more acceptable substitutes. This shift changed not only what worshippers saw, but also how the building communicated religious ideas through art.
In 843, the official restoration of icon veneration—later celebrated as the “Triumph of Orthodoxy”—ended the main period of Iconoclasm. This decision reopened the door for large-scale figural decoration in major churches. For Hagia Sophia, it set up a new phase of rebuilding the interior’s visual program with mosaics and icons.
In 867, Hagia Sophia received a major new apse mosaic of the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) holding the Christ Child, placed high above the sanctuary. Installed after Iconoclasm, it made a clear statement that sacred images had returned to official worship. The mosaic became a focal point for the building’s renewed decorative identity in the Middle Byzantine period.
In 989, an earthquake caused serious structural damage to Hagia Sophia, including parts of the dome. The Byzantine court brought in the Armenian architect Trdat to oversee the rebuilding work. Repairs continued for several years and helped keep the monument functional as a cathedral despite recurring seismic risk.
