The Protaton (Dormition of the Theotokos) was founded in Karyes as the principal church and ecclesiastical seat of the Athonite Protos. Its role as administrative and liturgical hub made it a focal point for patronage of monumental painting and the safeguarding of key Athonite documents.

The Protaton’s celebrated frescoes—among the most important examples of Palaiologan monumental painting on Athos—are commonly dated to around 1300 and traditionally attributed to Manuel Panselinos (with ongoing scholarly debate about attribution). In 1952–1953, the Library of Congress and the International Greek New Testament Project microfilmed a large set of Athos manuscripts (including Greek and Georgian biblical and related texts). This milestone greatly expanded scholarly access to Athonite manuscript heritage beyond the Holy Mountain.
Mount Athos was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing its exceptional monastic landscape and its artistic and manuscript traditions—central to the preservation and study of Byzantine and post-Byzantine Orthodox art.
