Mystras grows into a key late-Byzantine center
Labels: Mystras, MoreaAlthough the fortress of Mystras was founded by Frankish rulers in 1248–1249, it became increasingly important for Byzantium after the mid-13th century. In the Palaeologan era, Mystras developed into a major political and cultural hub in the Morea (the Peloponnese), supporting churches and fresco programs that became hallmarks of late Byzantine art.
