In 1218 a fire damaged the earlier cathedral complex at Amiens. This disaster helped set the stage for a major rebuilding effort in the new Gothic style. It also explains why the Gothic cathedral’s construction history relies on later records and scattered milestones.
Work on the current cathedral traditionally begins in 1220 under Bishop Evrard de Fouilloy. Later records associate the early campaign with master mason Robert de Luzarches, followed by Thomas de Cormont and then Renaud de Cormont. The project aimed to match Amiens’ growing city and pilgrimage needs.
Unlike many medieval cathedrals that began at the east end, Amiens’ work advanced early on in the nave and west front. This choice was shaped by site constraints and nearby property that was not immediately available. The approach helped bring usable worship space online relatively quickly.
The great west façade portals developed a unified sculptural program that taught key Christian stories to a public that often learned through images. The portals include themes tied to Christ, the Virgin Mary, and local identity such as Saint Firmin. This entrance zone became one of the cathedral’s most influential works of Gothic sculpture.
By 1236, the nave (and much of the west-front work) was far enough along to support regular worship. Finishing the nave early strengthened the cathedral’s role in civic and religious life even while construction continued elsewhere. It also helped sustain donations and momentum for the long project.
After the nave, builders advanced toward the east end, laying out the choir and its radiating chapels. This area mattered liturgically because it centered on the main altar and clergy services. The plan’s strong symmetry and three-level interior elevation became a hallmark of the cathedral’s design.
In 1247, Bishop Arnould de la Pierre was buried in the choir, indicating that this key eastern space was already usable. Burials inside a cathedral were major acts of status and memory, and they depended on an adequately finished sacred area. This milestone helps anchor the building chronology when few direct construction records survive.
After mid-century, construction appears to have slowed, likely reflecting financial pressures that affected many large church projects. Even during slow periods, planning and partial work could continue, keeping the overall design coherent. This pause also helps explain why some parts advanced in uneven stages.
A second major fire in 1258 damaged parts of the eastern chapels. The rebuilding response pushed the project into a new phase of design and construction, with adjustments visible in upper-level work. This event is an important turning point because it helps date later campaigns and technical choices.
Around the mid-13th century, Renaud de Cormont directed upper-level work on the transept and choir, introducing lighter, more open structural forms. A key innovation was the development of more delicate flying buttress solutions (external arches that carry vault forces outward to piers). These choices helped achieve greater height and brightness without sacrificing stability.
The axial stained-glass window of the upper choir is dated 1269, a strong sign that the choir’s upper walls and glazing were finished by then. Sources also connect this moment to the completion of the choir’s triforium and clerestory (the upper window zone). With the choir complete, the cathedral’s main liturgical core reached a functional endpoint for the 1220–1270 campaign.
By about 1270, the main structural campaign and the cathedral’s signature Gothic decorative program were largely in place: a coherent plan, towering three-part elevation, and a rich portal sculpture ensemble. Many original surfaces would have been painted, and traces of medieval color survive in places. Later centuries added and altered parts of the building, but the 13th-century campaign established the cathedral’s core identity.
Amiens Cathedral: Building Campaign and Decorative Program (c.1220–1270)
