In 1344, the Prague bishopric was raised to an archbishopric, strengthening Bohemia’s church status within Latin Christendom. This change was marked by launching a major new Gothic cathedral at Prague Castle—St. Vitus Cathedral—meant to match the ambition of the Luxembourg court and the new archdiocese.
Charles IV brought the architect Matthias of Arras to Prague to begin work on the new cathedral. Matthias planned the eastern parts (choir and chapels) in a style close to major French Gothic cathedrals, giving the project an international “court” look from the start.
On 1344-11-21, the foundation stone for St. Vitus Cathedral was ceremonially laid at Prague Castle. The event tied the building program to royal authority and church reform, helping make the cathedral a central symbol of Bohemian identity and power.
Matthias of Arras died in 1352, before the cathedral could be completed. His death created a turning point: the project could either continue in a conservative French mode or shift toward newer Central European Gothic ideas.
In 1356, the young master builder Peter Parler assumed control of the cathedral workshop. Under Parler, the project moved toward more inventive Late Gothic forms, helping define a style that would influence Bohemia, Poland, and neighboring regions.
Parler built the St. Wenceslas Chapel within the cathedral complex, creating a richly decorated shrine tied to Bohemia’s patron saint. The chapel connected dynastic politics to sacred space, reinforcing the cathedral as both a church and a state monument.
Between about 1374 and 1383, the cathedral’s triforium (an interior gallery above the nave arcade) and upper walls advanced under Parler’s direction. The portrait busts placed there—including rulers, church leaders, and even the architects—visually recorded who shaped the project and asserted the high status of the cathedral workshop.
Peter Parler died in 1399, but his workshop and family tradition continued to influence building in Bohemia and beyond. By this point, St. Vitus already represented a distinct Central European Gothic direction, not just an imported French model.
From 1419 to 1434, the Hussite Wars brought major religious and political conflict to Bohemia. During this period, large-scale cathedral construction effectively stalled, showing how quickly artistic programs could be reshaped by war and religious division.
In 1471, Vladislas II of the Jagiellon dynasty became king of Bohemia, beginning a new political era after the mid-15th-century upheavals. Jagiellonian rule helped set conditions for renewed royal and court patronage, including Late Gothic building campaigns in Prague and other Central European centers.
After about 1490, a new Royal Oratory (a gallery for the ruler and court during services) was built into St. Vitus Cathedral and attributed to Benedikt Rejt (Ried), a leading late-15th-century Bohemian architect. The oratory shows how Late Gothic in Central Europe could blend elaborate vaulting and naturalistic decoration with changing court needs.
In 1502, Benedikt Rejt’s Vladislav Hall at Prague Castle was completed, creating a vast ceremonial space with complex Late Gothic vaulting. Its scale and engineering became a landmark of Bohemian (and wider Central European) Late Gothic, showing a shift from purely sacred cathedral projects toward equally ambitious secular court architecture.
