King Louis IX (Saint Louis) obtained the Crown of Thorns from the Latin Emperor Baldwin II. The purchase helped make Paris a major center for revered Christian relics and created a need for a secure, prestigious setting to display and protect them.
After the relics arrived in France, Louis IX organized major public ceremonies to mark their entry into Paris. This public reception connected the relics to royal authority and set the stage for a purpose-built chapel to house them.
Louis IX commissioned a new royal chapel inside the palace complex on the Île de la Cité. The plan was a two-level building: a lower chapel for palace staff and an upper chapel designed like a giant reliquary (a container for relics).
Work advanced rapidly on a compact but ambitious design associated with the Rayonnant phase of Gothic architecture, which emphasizes slender supports and large areas of window space. The structure’s engineering made it possible for the upper chapel walls to function largely as stained glass framed by stone.
The main stained-glass cycle for the upper chapel was produced and installed during the building campaign. The windows were designed to tell a continuous biblical story while also linking that story to the French monarchy and the relics kept in the chapel.
The upper chapel’s fifteen tall stained-glass windows presented a large narrative cycle with 1,113 scenes from the Old and New Testaments, culminating in themes tied to the relics in Paris. This program helped make Sainte-Chapelle a key monument for understanding 13th-century stained glass and royal imagery.
The chapel was consecrated on April 26, 1248. The dedication marked the successful completion of a fast, coordinated project linking architecture and stained glass to the display of Louis IX’s relic collection.
After consecration, Louis IX’s relics were moved into the upper chapel with ceremony. The building’s design—two floors, a highly elevated shrine space, and walls of glass—supported regular royal worship while emphasizing the relics’ sacred status.
Over the later 13th century, the chapel’s stained glass and interior decoration were maintained and selectively updated as needs changed, while most of the main window cycle remained medieval. These changes helped keep the chapel usable as a royal shrine while preserving its core 1240s visual program.
During the French Revolution, Sainte-Chapelle was sacked and its religious function was disrupted. Relics and furnishings were removed, and the building was repurposed, breaking the original connection between the stained-glass program and an active royal reliquary chapel.
Public interest in preserving medieval monuments led to a large restoration campaign starting in 1840. Several architects directed the work over time, including Félix Duban, Jean-Baptiste Lassus, Émile Boeswillwald, and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, aiming to recover the chapel’s medieval appearance and repair the glass.
A detailed restoration of the stained-glass windows begun in 2008 was completed in 2015. This work stabilized and cleaned the glazing so the 13th-century narrative cycle—still largely original—could be seen clearly as a central achievement of Gothic art.
