Miró married Pilar Juncosa on October 12, 1929. Their partnership became foundational to his life and working conditions during the interwar years that bridged Paris, Catalonia, and later, wartime displacement.
Miró and Pilar’s only child, Maria Dolors Miró, was born on July 17, 1930, a major personal milestone during the period when Miró was increasingly expanding his practice beyond easel painting.
In 1931 Miró intensified his anti-traditional stance in an interview, declaring his intention to “destroy” what existed in painting and expressing “utter contempt for painting.” The rhetoric crystallized his turn toward experiments (reliefs, assemblage, and other disruptions) while still working within and against the medium.
With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Miró left Spain and arrived in Paris with his family on December 16, 1936, entering a constrained living situation that reshaped his working methods and pushed his art toward sharper political engagement.
Miró produced Aidez l’Espagne (1937), a graphic work supporting the Spanish Republic. It became one of his best-known direct political statements, mobilizing his simplified figure-sign language for propaganda and solidarity.
Between January 24 and May 29, 1937, Miró painted Still Life with Old Shoe in Paris, a searing response to the Spanish Civil War that translated domestic objects into an ominous, apocalyptic tableau—marking a dramatic tonal shift within his Surrealist-era experimentation.
Commissioned for the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition, Miró made the mural The Reaper (Catalan Peasant in Revolt), shown alongside works including Picasso’s Guernica. The mural later disappeared, surviving chiefly through photographs, but it signaled Miró’s full entry into the Republic’s cultural front in Paris.
