It became an early reference point for artists and writers who wanted Surrealism to have a visible public presence in Britain. This set the stage for organizing a major London exhibition the next year.
The International Surrealist Exhibition opened at 3 p.m. on 1936-06-11 at the New Burlington Galleries in London. It brought together hundreds of works by leading European Surrealists and British participants, making it the first large-scale Surrealist exhibition in the UK. The show put Surrealism in front of a mass audience and pushed the movement from private circles into public culture.
The London exhibition ran until 1936-07-04, giving the public weeks of lectures, events, and densely hung displays. Its closing marked the end of Surrealism’s first big public “arrival” in Britain. Attention then shifted toward building a lasting group and infrastructure rather than a one-time spectacle.
In response to the exhibition’s impact, a British Surrealist group began meeting, exhibiting, and publishing. This was important because it turned the 1936 event into an ongoing movement with shared commitments and disputes. The group’s later history (including eventual fracture) is closely tied to the pressures of politics and war.
The London Gallery was established in the late 1930s and became a center for Surrealism in England, with E. L. T. Mesens as director and support from figures such as Roland Penrose. By giving Surrealist art a commercial and exhibition base, it helped sustain the movement beyond one-off shows. The gallery’s program connected British audiences with major European Surrealists.
In 1938, the London Gallery’s magazine began publication (first appearing in April 1938) and soon became known as London Bulletin. It spread Surrealist writing, images, and exhibition documentation to readers who could not attend shows in person. This helped Surrealism function as a network of ideas as well as a set of artworks.
From 1938-06-07 to 1938-08-28, the New Burlington Galleries hosted Twentieth Century German Art, a major response to Nazi attacks on so-called “degenerate art.” While not a Surrealist exhibition, it shaped the same London modern-art environment in which Surrealists worked and argued. It highlighted how modern art, including Surrealism, was entangled with politics as Europe moved closer to war.
From 1938-10-04 to 1938-10-29, Picasso’s Guernica was exhibited at the New Burlington Galleries with numerous preparatory works. The display aimed to raise funds for Spanish relief during the Spanish Civil War, linking modern art to urgent political causes. For British Surrealism, it reinforced the idea that avant-garde art could serve public, anti-fascist purposes as war threatened Europe.
In January 1939 the London Gallery mounted Living Art in England, mixing Surrealist and non-Surrealist modern work. This mattered because it showed Surrealism operating inside a broader modernist field rather than as a sealed-off style. As the political situation worsened, keeping modern art visible in London became harder and more contested.
London Bulletin’s last issue appeared in June 1940, reflecting how wartime conditions broke up international connections and made avant-garde publishing difficult. The end of the magazine reduced a key platform for British Surrealism’s public voice. Surrealist activity did not disappear, but it became more fragmented and shaped by wartime realities.
In 1946, Roland Penrose, Herbert Read, E. L. T. Mesens, and others helped found the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London. The ICA provided a new postwar venue where modern art and ideas could be shown and debated outside older institutions. This marked a shift from a tight Surrealist group identity toward a broader “contemporary arts” framework.
After closing during World War II, the London Gallery reopened in 1946. Its return gave British Surrealists and their allies a physical place to regroup, exhibit, and maintain international contacts. But the postwar art world was changing fast, and Surrealism now competed with new movements and institutions.
On 1947-07-07, the international Surrealist exhibition at Galerie Maeght in Paris opened, often referred to by its catalogue title Le Surréalisme en 1947. The show attempted to reassert Surrealism after the war, but it also revealed how the movement’s energy and public role had changed since the 1930s. For British Surrealism, it was a reminder that the “center” in Paris was re-forming, even as British networks were developing their own paths.
By the late 1940s, internal tensions and shifting postwar priorities weakened the London-based Surrealist group. Britannica notes that the group’s final signed declaration appeared in 1947, and disagreements around this period contributed to division. The result was not a single dramatic end, but a gradual loss of cohesion as artists dispersed into other modernist circles.
Around 1950, the London Gallery (a key headquarters and exhibition site for British Surrealism) closed permanently, according to historical accounts of the gallery’s 1938–1950 span. This closure removed a central venue that had helped Surrealism survive prewar excitement, wartime disruption, and postwar transition. By this point, Surrealism in Britain continued more as influence and local groupings than as a single London-centered movement.
