Architects James Stuart and Nicholas Revett came back to London in 1755 after systematically recording ancient buildings in Athens. After studying in Italy, Robert Adam returned to Britain in 1758 and quickly gained major commissions. The British Museum opened its doors in 1759, inviting “studious and curious persons” to view its collections. King George III founded the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768 to support training and public exhibitions in painting, sculpture, and architecture. In 1772, Sir William Hamilton sold a major collection of ancient vases to the British Museum. These objects, and the publications around them, helped spread classical motifs into British design, including architecture, interiors, and decorative arts. In the mid-1770s, the old Somerset House was demolished and construction began on a large new government complex designed by Sir William Chambers. By 1779–1780, the Royal Academy took up residence in Somerset House and began holding major exhibitions there. This put art, architecture, and public display in a highly visible neoclassical setting. On 16 October 1788, John Soane became architect and surveyor to the Bank of England. Over the following decades, he rebuilt and expanded the Bank in a powerful neoclassical language suited to a major financial institution. From 1801, Lord Elgin’s agents removed sculptures from the Parthenon and other Acropolis buildings in Athens and shipped them toward Britain. The removals soon became central to British debates about collecting antiquities and the ethics of acquisition. The sculptures also influenced British artists and public taste by providing close study of ancient Greek art.
In March 1816, a House of Commons Select Committee produced a report on whether the nation should buy Elgin’s collection of sculptured marbles. The inquiry framed the sculptures as important for “cultivating” the fine arts in Britain, even as criticism of the removals existed in public life. This official review set up the transfer of the sculptures into a national museum context.
On 1 July 1816, Parliament passed the British Museum Act 1816, transferring the Elgin collection to the Trustees of the British Museum for public use. This made the sculptures a permanent part of Britain’s national collections and ensured their ongoing public display and study. The acquisition became a lasting legacy of Grand Tour collecting—along with continuing controversy about ownership and return.
Dulwich Picture Gallery opened to the public in 1817 in a building designed by John Soane. As England’s oldest public art gallery, it reflected a growing interest in making art collections accessible outside elite private settings. This shift helped carry Neoclassical ideals—order, education, and public improvement—into Britain’s emerging museum and gallery culture.
