In Copenhagen, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts was formally founded at Charlottenborg, creating a national center for training painters, sculptors, and architects. Over time, its medals, travel grants, and teaching posts helped shape what later became Denmark’s strong Neoclassical tradition. This institution is a key starting point for the later Copenhagen-based Thorvaldsen circle.
A major fire damaged large parts of Copenhagen, adding to the city’s later need for coordinated rebuilding. In the decades that followed, reconstruction projects helped give Copenhagen a new, more uniform look. This created opportunities for architects and artists working in a sober Neoclassical style.
Bertel Thorvaldsen left Denmark for Rome on a travel stipend and entered the international world of Classical study and patronage. Rome’s ancient art and the city’s community of artists strongly shaped his style. His studio later became a gathering point for many Danish artists visiting Italy.
In Rome, Thorvaldsen’s Jason with the Golden Fleece became his key early success: the plaster model was completed and commissioned in 1803, signaling international recognition. The work’s clear contour and idealized anatomy became a model for Neoclassical sculpture. Its success strengthened Thorvaldsen’s role as a major reference point for Danish artists in Rome and Copenhagen.
During the Napoleonic Wars, British forces bombarded Copenhagen, causing fires and major damage in the city. The destruction pushed long-term rebuilding programs and helped set the stage for a more systematic use of Neoclassicism in architecture. This environment later connected architecture, sculpture, and civic identity in Copenhagen.
After wartime damage, architect Christian Frederik Hansen led the long reconstruction of Copenhagen’s Church of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke) in a strict Neoclassical style. The building’s temple-like exterior expressed the period’s interest in Classical models and civic clarity. The church later became a major showcase for Thorvaldsen’s religious sculpture in Copenhagen.
Painter C. W. Eckersberg was named professor at the Royal Danish Academy, where he taught careful observation, perspective, and clear composition. His teaching helped set a disciplined visual language that worked well with Neoclassical ideals. This strengthened Copenhagen as a training hub for artists who moved between local subjects and Classical references.
Sculptor Hermann Ernst Freund returned to Copenhagen after years in Rome, where he had worked closely within Thorvaldsen’s circle. Back in Denmark, he applied a refined classical style while also developing themes from Nordic mythology. His move shows how the Rome experience fed directly into Copenhagen’s art scene.
Freund’s appointment as a sculpture professor helped institutionalize the skills and networks that Danish artists had built in Rome. His teaching and public commissions reinforced a Copenhagen environment where Neoclassical technique could support both Classical and Nordic subjects. This broadened what “Neoclassical” could mean in a Scandinavian setting.
Thorvaldsen was appointed director of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, tying Denmark’s leading Neoclassical sculptor directly to Copenhagen’s main art institution. The post symbolized how Danish culture was claiming international success as a national asset. It also helped prepare the political and cultural case for bringing him back from Rome permanently.
A Copenhagen committee was formed to establish a museum for Thorvaldsen and his collections, linking civic pride with cultural planning. This effort relied on fundraising and broad public support, showing that art was becoming part of national identity and public life. The project also connected artists, scholars, and patrons in a shared “Thorvaldsen circle” in Copenhagen.
The committee launched a nationwide fundraising campaign to finance what would become Thorvaldsens Museum. The campaign shows a shift from elite collecting to a public, civic model of cultural heritage. It also helped make Copenhagen the long-term home of Thorvaldsen’s works and collections.
Work began on a new museum building designed by Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, developed specifically to house Thorvaldsen’s art and collections. Its architecture combined Classical references with bold color and decorative programs, making the building itself part of the artistic statement. The project helped fix Thorvaldsen’s legacy into Copenhagen’s urban center.
After more than four decades based in Rome, Thorvaldsen returned to Copenhagen and was publicly celebrated on arrival. His return brought international Neoclassicism into direct contact with Copenhagen’s local institutions and audiences. It also made it possible to transfer his works and collections into a purpose-built museum project.
Art historian Niels Laurits Høyen delivered a major lecture arguing that Scandinavian artists should draw inspiration from their own landscapes, history, and people instead of mainly looking to Italy and Classical antiquity. The talk helped redirect cultural priorities toward national themes, which gradually weakened the centrality of strict Neoclassicism. This shift is a clear endpoint to the Thorvaldsen-era balance between Rome-based classicism and Copenhagen cultural life.
Thorvaldsen died in Copenhagen, turning the museum project and his bequest from a living plan into a long-term responsibility for the city. His death also marked a transition from an active “circle” around the artist to a curated legacy. In practice, this helped make Neoclassicism in Denmark something preserved, taught, and displayed rather than led by its most famous practitioner.
Thorvaldsens Museum was inaugurated and then opened to the public, formally transferring Thorvaldsen’s bequest to Copenhagen. As a single-artist museum, it set a lasting model for how a city could present an artist as part of civic identity. The museum’s opening also provided a stable “afterlife” for the Thorvaldsen circle, preserving Copenhagen’s Neoclassical moment for later generations.
