King George III approved the creation of the Royal Academy of Arts as an artist-led institution to promote the fine arts through education and an annual public exhibition. The founding charter (often called the “Instrument”) established a new national center for training and taste in British art at a moment when Neoclassical ideals were gaining influence.
In its first year, the Academy established formal schools focused on drawing from classical casts (“antique”) and from the living model. These practices reflected Neoclassical belief that strong drawing and knowledge of idealized form were the foundation of serious art.
At the opening of the Academy’s public program, President Joshua Reynolds delivered his first lecture (“Discourse”) to students and members. The Discourses argued for rigorous training, close study of celebrated “Old Master” art, and ambitious subject matter—ideas that supported a British version of Neoclassical doctrine.
The Royal Academy launched its first annual exhibition in Pall Mall, creating a high-profile public space where artists could compete for attention and patrons. This exhibition tradition helped turn academic standards—especially history painting and classical taste—into practical career advantages.
The Royal Academy’s teaching activities were given temporary accommodation for its library and schools in Old Somerset House. This improved the Academy’s capacity to train students even while exhibitions continued elsewhere, strengthening its role as an educational authority.
The Academy was installed in purpose-built apartments in the first completed wing of New Somerset House, designed by architect Sir William Chambers. Having dedicated rooms connected exhibitions, teaching, and administration in one prominent government complex—an important boost to the Academy’s public authority.
A widely circulated image of the 1787 private view shows Reynolds guiding the Prince of Wales (later George IV) through the exhibition. Such moments linked Academy taste to elite patronage, reinforcing Neoclassical “official” standards through social visibility and court connection.
Across the 1770s and 1780s, Reynolds continued delivering Discourses that promoted hierarchy in art, study of antique and Renaissance models, and the pursuit of “grand” subjects. These lectures helped define what the Academy rewarded in exhibitions and teaching, shaping British Neoclassical doctrine for students and patrons.
After Reynolds’s death, the American-born history painter Benjamin West became President of the Royal Academy. His leadership reinforced the Academy’s commitment to large-scale history painting—an art form closely tied to Neoclassical values of moral seriousness and classical reference.
The British Institution opened in Pall Mall as a rival exhibition venue backed by aristocratic “connoisseurs” rather than working artists. Its shows—especially displays of Old Masters—competed for audiences and prestige, pressuring the Royal Academy to defend and refine its authority over standards and patronage.
The Academy formally established “Varnishing Day,” when members could add finishing touches to works after they were hung. This practice reflects how the Summer Exhibition worked as both a public spectacle and a professional marketplace, where presentation and Academy status affected sales and reputation.
George III, who had approved the Academy’s creation and given it royal backing, died in 1820. By this point the Royal Academy had established a durable system linking schooling, exhibitions, and elite patronage—key mechanisms for spreading and enforcing Neoclassical doctrine in Britain.
