Adam surveys Diocletian’s Palace at Split
Labels: Robert Adam, Diocletian's Palace, SplitDuring his Grand Tour, Robert Adam traveled from Rome to Split (then commonly called Spalatro) to measure and draw the ruins of Emperor Diocletian’s palace. The trip gave him first-hand evidence of Roman domestic space and decoration, not just temples. These studies became a foundation for the neoclassical approach he later applied to British houses.
