David completed Oath of the Horatii in 1785 and exhibited it at the Paris Salon, where it became a major success. Its clear outlines, Roman subject, and message of public duty over private feeling helped define Neoclassical painting in Paris just before the Revolution.
In 1787, David debuted The Death of Socrates at the Paris Salon. By presenting Socrates as calm in the face of death, David strengthened his reputation for moral, lesson-driven history painting—an approach that would soon be applied to revolutionary politics.
David painted the double portrait Antoine Laurent Lavoisier and Marie Anne Lavoisier in 1788, showing a modern couple linked to science and elite status. It was excluded from public display at the 1789 Salon because exhibiting a figure tied to the Ancien Régime could provoke political anger in the revolutionary climate.
David’s The Lictors Bringing to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1789, the same year the Revolution began. Its story of a Roman leader sacrificing his sons for the republic gained immediate political force, turning an ancient subject into a sharp comment on current events.
David produced a major painted sketch for The Tennis Court Oath, commemorating the deputies’ pledge of 20 June 1789 to create a constitution. The sketch was shown in 1791, but David never finished the large final painting, reflecting how quickly the Revolution’s unity gave way to division.
In September 1792, David moved from being a celebrated painter to being an elected revolutionary politician. He became a deputy for Paris in the National Convention, aligning himself with the radical Montagnard faction and placing art and state power in the same hands.
As a Convention deputy, David voted for the death sentence in the trial of Louis XVI. This decision later shaped his private life and public reputation, linking his name permanently to regicide and to the Revolution’s most irreversible step.
In 1793, David painted The Last Moments of Michel Lepeletier to honor a deputy assassinated after voting for the king’s execution. The work became part of a new revolutionary image culture focused on “martyrs,” but it was removed in 1795 and later disappeared, surviving mainly through copies and prints.
After Jean-Paul Marat’s assassination in July 1793, the revolutionary government commissioned David to paint him. David’s The Death of Marat (1793) turned a recent political killing into a solemn, almost sacred image, showing how Neoclassical restraint could be used for modern propaganda.
In 1794, while imprisoned, David painted his Self-Portrait. The work is often read as a controlled, sober image of the artist at a moment when his political identity had become dangerous, signaling a shift from public revolutionary heroics toward personal survival and reputation.
On 8 June 1794, David served as the main organizer of the Festival of the Supreme Being in Paris, a state ceremony promoted by Robespierre. The event used temporary architecture and theatrical staging to teach civic and moral ideas—showing David’s role not only as painter, but also as designer of revolutionary public spectacle.
After the Thermidorian Reaction (the political reversal following Robespierre’s fall in late July 1794), David was denounced and arrested for his ties to the Robespierreans. His imprisonment marked a turning point: the artist who had helped shape revolutionary imagery now faced punishment as the Revolution shifted direction.
David was released from prison in late December 1794 and was readmitted to the National Convention immediately afterward. The quick return showed that his political fate was still unsettled, even as the Revolution moved away from the Terror-era leadership he had supported.
After unrest in 1795, David was arrested again as a former Montagnard. He was amnestied on 26 October 1795, after which he largely abandoned active politics—closing the chapter in which his Paris career was directly tied to revolutionary government.
