In 1832, Ingres painted the Portrait of Monsieur Bertin, showing the influential journalist Louis-François Bertin. In 1834, Ingres exhibited The Martyrdom of Saint Symphorian at the Paris Salon. In 1841, Ingres returned to Paris after years directing the French Academy in Rome. Soon after his return, Ingres painted a portrait of the duc d’Orléans (the heir to the French throne). After the duke died in 1842, Ingres received commissions related to remembrance, including designs for stained-glass windows for the chapel built on the accident site. In 1848, during the political upheaval that created the French Second Republic, Ingres completed Venus Anadyomene, a nude he had begun decades earlier. Between 1851 and 1853, Ingres painted The Princesse de Broglie, completing it in 1853. At the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, Ingres was given prominent space to show a large retrospective selection of his work. In 1856, Ingres completed The Source, a painting he had begun around 1820 and finished in Paris late in life. The work turned a studio nude study into a finished “ideal” figure and became one of his most celebrated late canvases. It also shows how Ingres’s late career often involved revisiting and perfecting long-running projects in line with academic standards.

Ingres died in Paris on January 14, 1867, ending a long career that shaped French academic standards in painting and drawing. By the time of his death, he had become both a model for official taste and a target for critics who wanted new directions in art.
