Haacke begins producing Condensation Cube works—sealed acrylic volumes containing water in which evaporation and condensation continuously reconfigure the visible surface. Although not yet an explicit institutional critique, these “systems” works established the methodological basis (real-time processes, viewer experience, and context) that later expanded into social and institutional systems analysis.
Haacke develops Circulation (1969), a pump-driven loop moving water and air through transparent tubing. Later commentary on the work frames it as moving from closed physical systems toward “real-time systems,” a conceptual bridge to tracking flows of capital, power, and institutional influence.
At MoMA’s exhibition Information (July 2–September 20, 1970), Haacke installs MoMA Poll, inviting visitors to vote “yes” or “no” on whether Nelson Rockefeller’s stance on Nixon’s Indochina policy would affect their vote. The piece made museum governance and elite political influence part of the artwork’s content through public participation and transparent tallying.
A planned 1971 solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York) was cancelled about six weeks before opening, a decision discussed in relation to Haacke’s Shapolsky installation and the museum board’s objections to its status and implications. The cancellation became a defining episode in the history of institutional critique.
Haacke completes Shapolsky et al. Manhattan Real Estate Holdings – a Real Time Social System, as of May 1, 1971, assembling photographs, maps, and typed data to document a network of New York real-estate holdings. It exemplified a documentary, data-forward approach to exposing intersections of capital, ownership, and public consequence.
Haacke creates Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Board of Trustees (1974), a multi-part silkscreen work foregrounding the identities and roles of institutional power-brokers. It extended his critique from artworks and exhibitions to the governance structures that shape what museums can display.
For Cologne’s Projekt ’74 (marking the Wallraf-Richartz Museum’s anniversary), Haacke’s Manet-PROJEKT ’74—a provenance-and-power investigation tied to Manet’s Bunch of Asparagus—is rejected by the museum. On the press-opening day, it is shown instead at Galerie Paul Maenz, underscoring censorship dynamics and institutional gatekeeping as part of the work’s meaning.
Haacke produces Seurat’s “Les Poseuses” (Small Version), 1888–1975 (1975), combining an image reproduction with multiple text panels that trace ownership, transactions, and implicated contexts. The work sharpened institutional critique by treating market valuation and collecting histories as mechanisms that can reshape (or neutralize) meaning.
Haacke makes On Social Grease (1975), a set of plaques presenting quotations from corporate and art-world figures about sponsorship, influence, and the arts’ instrumental value. By using authoritative voices verbatim, the work framed corporate patronage as a structural condition of cultural institutions rather than a neutral benefaction.
Haacke first realizes MetroMobiltan in May 1985 (John Weber Gallery, New York), juxtaposing the Metropolitan Museum’s visual language with Mobil’s corporate identity and a documentary image connected to South African state violence. The work targeted reputational “polishing” via cultural sponsorship and the museum’s complicity in such image management.
In Helmsboro Country (1990), Haacke adopts the look of cigarette advertising to address U.S. culture-war politics associated with Senator Jesse Helms, including pressures on arts funding and attacks on queer art. The piece exemplifies appropriation strategies used to connect mass-media persuasion to institutional and governmental control over culture.
At the 45th Venice Biennale (1993), Haacke presents Germania in the German Pavilion, intervening directly in the pavilion’s architectural-symbolic legacy. The installation famously included the disruption of the marble floor and a confrontation with the pavilion’s Nazi-era associations, turning national representation itself into the object of critique.
Haacke shares the Golden Lion (with Nam June Paik) for the German Pavilion at the 1993 Venice Biennale, a major institutional recognition that simultaneously affirmed the critical force of Germania and highlighted the paradox of institutional critique being honored by the very structures it interrogates.
