In Artforum, Sol LeWitt argued that in Conceptual art the idea matters more than the handmade object. This text helped set the intellectual framework for art that could be planned as a set of decisions and then carried out later. It also prepared the ground for wall drawings as instructions that others could execute.
LeWitt’s first wall drawing was created for the inaugural Paula Cooper Gallery exhibition in SoHo, a benefit supporting anti–Vietnam War organizing. This debut tied his new wall-based, temporary drawing form to both a new gallery scene and a specific historical moment. The exhibition is widely treated as the starting point of the wall drawing program.
LeWitt’s “Sentences on Conceptual Art” was first published in early 1969, presenting short statements that reinforced the priority of the concept over execution. These ideas matched his wall drawing approach, where a work could be defined by instructions rather than by a single physical object. The text helped clarify why different people could legitimately produce the same work from the same plan.
Wall Drawing #11 was first installed at Paula Cooper Gallery, using a simple rule system that combines different types of lines in a grid-like division of the wall. It shows how LeWitt treated drawing as a set of repeatable variations rather than a single “one-off” image. Early installations often involved other artists helping execute the work under LeWitt’s direction.
Wall Drawing #91 was conceived and first realized in 1971 and later executed again by following LeWitt’s written directions. The museum description highlights a key point: the wall drawing could be painted over when an exhibition ended, but the instructions allowed it to be realized again elsewhere. This practice turned “installation” into an essential part of the artwork’s life.
By the mid-1970s, museums described LeWitt’s wall drawings as artworks that exist primarily as instructions plus a certificate of authenticity. This approach separated the artist’s authorship (the concept and plan) from the skilled labor of drawing and painting on-site. It also made the works adaptable to different walls and architectural spaces.
As LeWitt’s wall drawings gained recognition, institutions began inviting him to create very large wall works in prominent public museum spaces. These projects demonstrated that instruction-based drawing could function like a mural—while still being temporary and reproducible. The expansion helped make wall drawings a major, long-term strand of contemporary art practice.
When Dia:Beacon opened, LeWitt was among the artists invited to choose locations for long-term installations. Dia installed a major wall drawing based on his 1968 “Drawing Series” system, connecting his earliest wall-drawing logic to a permanent museum setting. This marked a shift: wall drawings increasingly lived as recurring or extended installations, not only short-run exhibitions.
In 2006, Dia:Beacon opened an exhibition centered on LeWitt’s “Drawing Series” wall drawings, including early works from 1968 and related pieces from the early 1970s. Dia notes that LeWitt returned to execute a companion work and selected additional wall drawings for adjacent galleries. The run was later extended, reflecting how institutions maintained wall drawings as long-duration projects.
LeWitt died in New York City in 2007, after decades of developing wall drawings that could be executed by others from his instructions. Because the works were defined by plans, certificates, and diagrams, institutions and trained draftspeople could continue installing authorized wall drawings after his death. This made the wall drawing program a continuing practice rather than something that ended with the artist’s hand.
MASS MoCA opened Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective on November 16, 2008, after months of work by teams following LeWitt’s specifications. The project installed 105 wall drawings across three stories, designed as a long-term presentation of the full arc of his wall drawing practice. It showed how an instruction-based program could be preserved and revisited at museum scale.
In 2018, Artifex Press launched a digital catalogue raisonné dedicated to LeWitt’s wall drawings, aiming to document the works and their installation histories in a systematic way. This kind of reference project supports conservation decisions, authentication, and future installations. It also reflects how the wall drawing program came to be treated as a major, researchable body of work with many authorized realizations over time.
