A group of young Berlin artists founded the artist-run Galerie am Moritzplatz in Kreuzberg. The space helped launch what became known as the Neue Wilde (“New Wild Ones”), a German form of neo-expressionism that favored bold color, fast brushwork, and recognizable subjects. This local infrastructure mattered because it gave the movement an early base outside established museums and commercial galleries.
In New York, the artists’ collective Colab organized The Real Estate Show, a self-organized exhibition responding to the city’s housing crisis and urban neglect. It helped set the tone for early-1980s downtown art: improvised venues, collaboration, and a push against the established gallery system. This atmosphere would soon overlap with the rise of aggressively styled, figurative painting associated with neo-expressionism.
At the 1980 Venice Biennale, the section Aperto ’80 became associated with critic Achille Bonito Oliva’s term Transavanguardia (the Italian form of neo-expressionism). The label framed a wider European shift back toward painting and strong personal imagery after years dominated by conceptual and minimal approaches. This mattered for Germany and New York because it signaled an international “return to painting” rather than isolated local trends.
Colab’s Times Square Show ran for the entire month of June in a former massage parlor in Times Square. It mixed painting and sculpture with performance, fashion, and graffiti-related work, bringing street-level energy into a highly visible public setting. The show helped broaden what counted as “serious” contemporary art in New York, creating a context in which big, expressive painting could gain attention quickly.
The Galerie am Moritzplatz ended its run in 1981. Even though it was short-lived, it had already helped establish a recognizable Berlin network for the Neue Wilde. The movement’s center of gravity then shifted increasingly toward larger exhibitions and the broader international market.
The Royal Academy’s A New Spirit in Painting (January–March 1981) presented large-scale contemporary painting as a major international statement. The show helped legitimize the renewed interest in painting in the public eye and museum culture, not only in galleries and studios. It became a key reference point for neo-expressionism’s rapid rise in the early 1980s.
The exhibition New York/New Wave, curated by Diego Cortez at P.S.1, ran from February to April 1981 and showcased crossovers between art, music, graffiti, and photography. It documented how the downtown scene was moving into institutions, not just clubs or pop-up spaces. This institutional visibility helped set the stage for a wider boom in expressive, image-driven work in New York during the early 1980s.
In SoHo, Mary Boone’s gallery became a high-profile platform for new painting linked to neo-expressionism, including artists such as Julian Schnabel, David Salle, and Eric Fischl. The gallery’s success showed how quickly the “return to painting” could be amplified by strong promotion and collector interest. This helped turn an aesthetic shift into a market-driven movement with international reach.
documenta 7 (June–September 1982), directed by Rudi Fuchs in Kassel, gave major visibility to representational painting, including German Neue Wilde artists and related figures such as Baselitz, Penck, and Kiefer. By placing these works in a prominent international exhibition, documenta 7 helped move neo-expressionist approaches from a trend into a central narrative of early-1980s art. It also showed links between European painting revivals and New York scenes included in the show’s broader mix of work.
The exhibition Zeitgeist ran in West Berlin from October to December 1982, organized by Christos M. Joachimides and Norman Rosenthal. It brought together major international artists and included works associated with the Neue Wilde, presenting Berlin as a key site in the renewed focus on painting. By staging a large survey near the Berlin Wall, the show also connected expressive art with the era’s charged political geography, without reducing it to a single message.
By the early-to-mid 1980s, neo-expressionism became a leading market and media phenomenon in both Europe and the United States. Its shared features—recognizable imagery, intense subjectivity, and rough handling of paint—were often framed as a reaction against the conceptual and minimal art of the 1970s. This broad popularity also set up backlash, as critics debated whether the style represented renewal, regression, or commercialization.
In 1990, major New York auction results showed clear signs of a downturn, with high “buy-in” rates (works failing to sell) and totals far below pre-sale estimates. This shift mattered for neo-expressionism because the movement had been tightly linked to aggressive marketing and a booming collector economy in the 1980s. As the market cooled, neo-expressionism’s dominance faded, marking a practical endpoint to the 1979–1990 period as a coherent wave of revivals centered on Germany and New York.
