In the mid-1420s, Florentine merchant Felice Brancacci sponsored a large fresco program for his family chapel in Santa Maria del Carmine. The project centered on stories of Saint Peter, a subject tied to family identity and civic-religious values. This commission created the setting for Masaccio’s most influential Florentine works.
The older painter Masolino began the Brancacci Chapel frescoes and was soon joined by Masaccio. Their close work in the same space made stylistic contrasts easy to see—Masaccio’s figures tend to look heavier and more three-dimensional through strong light and shadow. This partnership helped shape the direction of Florentine Early Renaissance painting.
Masaccio painted “The Tribute Money” as part of the Saint Peter cycle in the Brancacci Chapel, commonly dated to about 1425. The fresco tells a Bible story in a single image by showing different moments of time in one landscape. Its convincing depth and strong light-and-shadow modeling influenced generations of painters.
Masaccio’s fresco of Adam and Eve being driven from Eden (often called the “Expulsion from Paradise”) became a landmark for emotional realism. The bodies are modeled with clear highlights and shadows (chiaroscuro), making them look solid and present in real space. The scene set a new standard for how human suffering could be shown in religious art.
In 1426, Masaccio completed the Pisa Altarpiece (a multi-panel work, or polyptych) for a Carmelite church in Pisa. Although not in Florence, it marks the same peak period as his Florentine frescoes and shows how his new sense of volume and space could work in panel painting. The altarpiece later became dismembered, with panels now dispersed.
Around 1425–1426, Masaccio painted the fresco commonly known as the “Holy Trinity” in Santa Maria Novella, Florence. The illusionistic architecture is constructed with one-point linear perspective, a method that uses converging lines to suggest depth on a flat wall. This work reinforced Masaccio’s role in making perspective a major tool of Renaissance painting.
Beyond the most famous panels, Masaccio took responsibility for several key scenes in the Brancacci Chapel cycle (including episodes like Peter healing and baptizing). These works strengthened the cycle’s visual unity through consistent lighting and believable human bodies. Together, the scenes helped establish a new, more natural style for large-scale religious storytelling.
Scholars place the completion of the “Holy Trinity” sometime in the later part of Masaccio’s Florentine period (often within 1425–1428). It is frequently described as among his last major works in Florence, showing a mature control of perspective and monumental figures. The fresco became a reference point for later artists studying how to build believable space.
By 1428, Masaccio traveled to Rome, leaving major Florentine projects behind. The Brancacci Chapel cycle was still unfinished when he departed, which interrupted what had become one of the most influential painting programs in the city. His move also shows how artists could follow networks of patronage beyond their home region.
Masaccio died in 1428 in Rome, still in his mid-twenties. His sudden death froze the development of his style at a moment when he had already transformed Florentine painting. The Brancacci frescoes remained incomplete, and his reputation grew largely through the influence of the works he left behind.
Decades after Masaccio’s death, Filippino Lippi was brought in to finish the Brancacci Chapel decoration in the 1480s. His additions completed the narrative cycle while preserving (as much as possible) the overall visual harmony. This late completion helped ensure that the chapel could be experienced as a full story rather than a fragment.
A major cleaning and restoration campaign in the late 20th century (commonly summarized as the 1980s, extending into 1990 in some accounts) removed darkened grime and revealed brighter original colors in the Brancacci Chapel. The work also clarified where earlier damage and repainting had altered the surfaces. This restoration helped modern viewers understand Masaccio’s color, lighting, and spatial effects more accurately.
