Francesco Squarcione is first recorded as a painter in 1426, a key early milestone for the figure who would soon shape Padua’s Early Renaissance workshop culture through collecting, copying, and teaching practices oriented to antiquity.
After returning to Padua, Squarcione opened a school for painters and took on early pupils beginning in 1431. The workshop’s emphasis on drawing and the study of antique models became foundational for Padua’s distinctive Early Renaissance visual language.
Andrea Mantegna arrived in Padua as a child and trained in Squarcione’s workshop, absorbing its program of careful drawing and archaeological classicism. This formation was decisive for the monumental, sculptural style that emerges in his earliest fresco work.
Donatello relocated to Padua in 1443, initiating a highly influential period of sculptural production (including the Gattamelata monument and works for the Basilica of Saint Anthony) that helped catalyze Paduan artists’ interest in classicism, anatomy, and forceful relief modeling.
Donatello produced a large bronze crucifix for the Basilica of Saint Anthony (the Santo), a technically ambitious work that exemplified the expressive, sculptural naturalism admired and studied by Paduan painters associated with Squarcione’s circle.
Work began on Donatello’s sculptural program for the high altar of the Basilica of Saint Anthony, a complex ensemble of bronze figures and reliefs that provided an immediate local model for combining antique-inspired form with intense spatial and narrative effects.
Donatello’s work on the bronze equestrian statue of Erasmo da Narni (Gattamelata) progressed through the later 1440s. Its revival of monumental antique equestrian imagery and commanding public presence made it a touchstone for Paduan classicizing ambitions.
Imperatrice Ovetari commissioned the decoration of the family chapel in the Church of the Eremitani (Ovetari Chapel) in 1448, engaging a team that included the young Andrea Mantegna and Niccolò Pizzolo. The project became Padua’s most important mid-century fresco enterprise.
The Ovetari Chapel fresco cycle was painted from 1448 to 1457 by Mantegna and collaborators. The program’s antique architectural settings, rigorous perspective, and sculptural figures exemplified the Paduan Early Renaissance emerging from Squarcione’s workshop culture.
The bronze equestrian monument of Gattamelata was installed in Padua in 1453, publicly demonstrating a new Renaissance classicism in civic sculpture. Its prestige reinforced Padua’s role as a northern Italian center for antique revival during Squarcione and Mantegna’s formative years.
Marco Zoppo is documented in Padua in Squarcione’s workshop in the early-to-mid 1450s, indicating the workshop’s continued role as a training hub for artists who carried Paduan classicizing draftsmanship into other regional schools.
The Ovetari Chapel decoration campaign concluded in January 1457. Its completion consolidated Mantegna’s reputation and established the chapel as a defining monument of Paduan Early Renaissance fresco practice shaped by Squarcione’s pedagogical focus on antiquity and drawing.
