On 1432-06-01, Florentine and Sienese forces fought the Battle of San Romano. The later paintings by Paolo Uccello would turn this recent military victory into a large, modern-style secular (non-church) image, giving him a major stage for testing new ideas about perspective and space.
Around the late 1430s, Uccello painted at least one panel of the three-part Battle of San Romano series, now in the Uffizi. The scene organizes lances, horses, and fallen weapons into strong directional lines, using them like a visual grid to suggest measured space across a busy battlefield.
In 1436, Uccello completed a large monochrome fresco of the condottiero (mercenary commander) Sir John Hawkwood in Florence Cathedral. The work is designed to look like a sculpted equestrian monument on a wall, showing Uccello applying perspective to create a convincing illusion of depth and physical presence.
By about 1438–1440, Uccello’s London panel (Niccolò da Tolentino leading the Florentines) pushed perspective effects further. Broken lances and scattered armor in the foreground are angled to lead the eye into the painted space, while the tightly arranged figures keep the action readable despite the crowding.
The third panel (now in the Louvre) completes the story sequence of the San Romano cycle, showing another key moment in the fighting. Across the set, Uccello balances pageantry (decorative armor and banners) with geometric order, making the battle both a celebration and a technical experiment in pictorial space.
In the Chiostro Verde (Green Cloister) at Santa Maria Novella, Uccello painted paired Noah scenes including The Flood and the Waters Receding. The frescoes use a shared vanishing point to organize architecture, figures, and the ark into a single deep space—an ambitious move for a large wall narrative.
In 1443, Uccello painted the cathedral’s internal clock face and the heads of prophets in its corners. The project shows him applying painting skills to civic and religious space, and it highlights the Renaissance overlap of art and measurement—timekeeping and image-making working together in one public object.
From 1443 to 1445, Uccello provided designs (cartoons) for major round stained-glass windows in the drum of Florence’s dome, including scenes such as the Nativity. Designing for glass required clear silhouettes and strong structure, and it gave Uccello another way to think through space, foreshortening, and legibility at large scale.
Alongside painting, Uccello produced analytical drawings that focus on how complex objects sit in space, including a celebrated “perspective study of a chalice.” These studies treat objects as geometric problems—measuring angles, edges, and receding lines—showing how workshop practice and “paper experiments” fed into his painted inventions.
Between 1465 and 1468, Uccello and his son Donato received payments in Urbino for work connected to the Profanation (Miracle) of the Host predella. The small scenes use interior spaces and patterned floors to drive lines toward vanishing points, showing Uccello applying his long perspective interests to compact, story-driven panels.
In a late domestic painting, The Hunt in the Forest (c. 1465–1470), Uccello created a deep nighttime landscape that draws the viewer inward. The Ashmolean notes that he mapped a grid and fixed a central vanishing point, turning spears, logs, and paths into guides that organize the recession into the dark woods.
By the end of this 1430–1465 arc, Uccello had shown that perspective could organize both public monuments and complex action scenes, from civic commissions to battle paintings. His approach—treating pictorial space as something that could be measured, tested, and revised—became a foundation that later Renaissance artists could build on, even when they pursued more naturalistic or emotionally focused styles.
