By about 1490, Giovanni Bellini was widely seen as Venice’s leading painter. His late work used oil paint to build soft transitions of light and color, creating calm, believable space that later painters in Venice could push in new directions.
Around 1501–1502, Bellini painted an official portrait of the new doge, Leonardo Loredan. The work helped define a dignified “state portrait” look for Venice and showed Bellini’s ability to combine realism with political symbolism.
Around 1503–1504, Giorgione completed the Castelfranco Madonna, one of the key early works linked to his short career. Its quiet mood, softened edges, and atmospheric setting signaled a newer Venetian direction that emphasized tone (color and light) over sharp outlines.

In 1511, Titian painted major frescoes for the Scuola del Santo in Padua, among his first large-scale independent projects. The works show him translating Giorgione’s mood into more forceful storytelling, with clearer action and stronger physical presence.

By 1515, Bellini’s Naked Young Woman in Front of a Mirror shows him responding to the softer, more tonal painting associated with Giorgione and the younger artists. It also hints at growing Venetian interest in sensual, classical themes—subjects that Titian would soon dominate.
