Michelangelo receives contract to carve David
Labels: Michelangelo, Opera del, Il GiganteOn August 16, 1501, Michelangelo received an official contract from the Opera del Duomo (the cathedral works office) to carve a large marble figure from a block known as il gigante (“the giant”). The statue was originally intended for Florence Cathedral, as part of a planned series of monumental figures. The commission gave the 26-year-old artist a high-profile chance to prove his skill on a difficult, previously abandoned block.
