Pope Julius II calls Michelangelo to Rome and commissions a monumental tomb project intended for St. Peter’s Basilica. Early plans envisioned a freestanding structure with many sculptures, setting up an unusually ambitious, long-term undertaking. This commission became a major source of delays and redesigns as papal priorities shifted.
As the project stalls and Michelangelo struggles to get decisions and payments, tensions rise with Julius II. In 1506 Michelangelo abruptly leaves Rome, and reconciliation efforts follow. The conflict shows how fragile large court commissions could be, even for a celebrated artist.
Julius II redirects Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, a massive fresco cycle completed in 1512. This new commission pulls time and energy away from the tomb, delaying progress and shifting Michelangelo’s workload from sculpture to painting. The tomb project becomes increasingly hard to sustain alongside competing papal demands.
Around this period Michelangelo produces the powerful marble figure of Moses, intended for Julius II’s monument. The sculpture becomes the enduring centerpiece of the final, much-reduced tomb. It also signals how the project’s legacy would ultimately rest on a few exceptional figures rather than the original grand program.
After Julius II’s death (February 21, 1513), his heirs continue the project but insist on revisions. A new contract is signed in May 1513, marking a major turning point as the tomb is reduced and rethought to be less ambitious and less expensive. This begins a long pattern of renegotiation and downsizing.
In July 1516, another contract sets a new, reduced design for the tomb, cutting back the number of planned sculptures and simplifying the architecture. This revision moves the project farther from the original freestanding “super-tomb” concept. The repeated redesigns reflect financial limits and shifting papal priorities after Julius II’s death.
Michelangelo spends long periods quarrying marble in Carrara and nearby areas for both the Julius tomb and other commissions. These practical demands—finding, extracting, and transporting massive blocks—slow production and add costs. The tomb increasingly competes with large Medici and papal projects for his time.
In the 1520s Michelangelo works on unfinished figures known as the “Prisoners” (or “Slaves”), meant for earlier versions of Julius II’s tomb. These sculptures show his interest in figures emerging from stone, but the tomb redesigns eventually make them unnecessary. Several remain unfinished and are now associated with the project’s long, troubled history.
By 1532, Michelangelo signs another contract that pushes the project toward a wall-tomb—a monument designed against a wall rather than a freestanding structure. This change reduces engineering complexity and cost but also narrows the artistic program. It marks a move toward finishing something workable after decades of delays.
In 1534, Pope Paul III orders Michelangelo to stop focusing on the tomb and take on major fresco projects, including The Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel. This diversion again delays the tomb and increases reliance on assistants and other sculptors for completion. The project’s outcome becomes more collaborative and less fully under Michelangelo’s hand.
In 1542, after further negotiations with Julius II’s family, Michelangelo returns to the tomb under a clarified, final wall-tomb plan. Around this time he begins the figures of Rachel and Leah for the lower register beside Moses. The restart shows a late, determined effort to bring a long-disputed commission to a close.
In 1545 the final, much-reduced tomb is set up in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. Much of the execution is completed by other sculptors based on Michelangelo’s designs, while his Moses and the figures of Rachel and Leah anchor the lower level. The installed monument closes the project with a compromised but durable outcome after roughly forty years of redesign and delay.
