By autumn 1504, Raphael was in Florence, where he closely studied the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. This move marks the start of his Florentine phase, when he sharpened his drawing, anatomy, and balanced composition. The city’s artistic competition helped push him toward the High Renaissance style.
In Florence, Raphael produced many small devotional pictures, especially Madonnas (paintings of Mary with the Christ Child). These works helped him build a reputation with elite patrons and let him test new ways to show tenderness, natural movement, and calm harmony. The Madonna theme became his most recognizable “signature” during these years.
Raphael painted the Madonna of the Goldfinch during his Florentine period, and it is tied to the 1506 wedding of Lorenzo Nasi and Sandra Canigiani. The painting shows a carefully balanced group of Mary, Jesus, and John the Baptist, using calm geometry and soft expressions. It became a key example of Raphael’s mature Florentine Madonna style.
Around 1507–1508, Raphael worked on La Belle Jardinière, another Madonna-and-Child composition shaped by Florentine ideas of natural poses and triangular balance. The painting is important because it shows Raphael refining a clear, gentle relationship among the figures without losing structure. It also reflects how popular his Madonnas had become among wealthy patrons.
Raphael’s first large Vatican project was the Stanza della Segnatura, decorated between 1508 and 1511. The room’s fresco program connected fields of knowledge—such as theology and philosophy—through images meant for a learned papal setting. This commission established Raphael as a leading fresco painter in Rome.
Toward the end of 1508, Raphael moved from Florence to Rome after being summoned by Pope Julius II. This shift changed his career: instead of mainly panel paintings, he now took on major public fresco projects. Rome also placed him at the center of papal power and competition with other leading artists.
Between about 1509 and 1511, Raphael painted The School of Athens in the Stanza della Segnatura. The fresco presents ancient philosophers in a grand classical space, using perspective and clear grouping to make a complex scene readable. It became one of the best-known images of the High Renaissance, linking classical learning to papal culture.
In 1511, Raphael painted a highly influential portrait of Pope Julius II, showing the pope in a thoughtful, private mood rather than a formal triumphal pose. The painting helped reshape how powerful religious leaders were portrayed in art. It also reflects Raphael’s rising status as the pope’s trusted artist.
After the Segnatura room, Raphael worked on the Stanza di Eliodoro, with key decoration dated to 1512–1514. The subjects emphasize divine protection of the Church, fitting the political and military pressures of the time. The project also required a larger workshop, showing Raphael’s growing role as both artist and organizer.
Soon after Pope Leo X’s election in March 1513, he commissioned Raphael to design a set of tapestry cartoons for the Sistine Chapel. These designs (later woven in Brussels) were meant to hang below Michelangelo’s ceiling, adding a new layer of papal storytelling focused on Saints Peter and Paul. The commission confirmed Raphael’s central role in Rome’s biggest visual programs.
From 1514 to 1517, Raphael designed the frescoes for the Stanza dell’Incendio del Borgo, but much of the painting was carried out by assistants. This change shows how his responsibilities—painting, architecture, and papal projects—required delegation. Even so, his designs continued to shape the look and message of the papal apartments.
After Bramante’s death in April 1514, Raphael was promoted to a leading architectural role on the new St. Peter’s Basilica. This appointment expanded his work beyond painting into large-scale design, strengthening his position in the papal court. It also increased the demands on his workshop and time.
In 1515–1516, Raphael and his studio produced the full-scale cartoons for the tapestry series commonly called the Acts of the Apostles. These cartoons were working designs used by weavers to create large, detailed textiles. The project spread Raphael’s compositions widely through copies and prints, increasing his influence across Europe.
Raphael’s last major painting, The Transfiguration, was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici and worked on in the years leading up to 1520. The altarpiece combines two Gospel episodes—Christ’s transfiguration above and the healing of a boy below—creating a dramatic contrast of light and struggle. Its ambitious design signals Raphael’s late-career push toward greater complexity and emotional range.
Raphael died in Rome on April 6, 1520, ending a remarkably fast rise from Florentine Madonna painter to chief designer of papal spaces. His death left major projects to his workshop and collaborators, but his frescoes and designs continued to define High Renaissance ideals of balance, clarity, and classical reference. He was buried in the Pantheon, underscoring his status in Rome.
