By about 1510, Raphael was leading large, multi-part projects in Rome that required a staffed workshop. This working model—master designs supported by assistants—set the foundation for how his style could be repeated, taught, and scaled. It also created a pipeline for later dissemination through drawings and prints.
Around 1510, engraver Marcantonio Raimondi moved to Rome, where he increasingly focused on reproducing major artists’ designs. This put him in the right place to help spread Raphael’s compositions beyond Rome through printed images. Prints could travel cheaply and be copied, multiplying Raphael’s visual influence.
From about 1510 onward, Raimondi’s earliest engravings after Raphael helped establish a repeatable way to translate Raphael’s drawings into prints. This was not only about copying finished paintings; engravings often drew on workshop designs and studies. The result was a graphic “language” that other engravers could learn and continue.
By 1513, Raimondi had met Raphael and was closely tied to his circle. Their collaboration made prints an organized extension of Raphael’s workshop, not just an after-the-fact copy. This helped stabilize Raphael’s style into standardized compositions that could be reproduced accurately.
Raimondi attracted and trained a group of engravers, including Marco Dente (Marco da Ravenna) and Agostino Veneziano. This mattered because it turned Raphael-related printmaking into a scalable operation rather than the output of one engraver. The expanding team increased volume and reach, spreading High Renaissance style across Europe.
Between 1516 and 1519, Raphael designed the Vatican Loggia decoration with many small biblical scenes framed by ornate grotesques (antique-inspired ornament). Workshop execution—especially Giovanni da Udine’s plants, animals, and festoons—made the Loggia a model that could be imitated in other palaces. Its clear, modular layout helped spread Raphael’s approach to decoration.
In 1517, Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici commissioned Raphael’s altarpiece Transfiguration. Large commissions like this depended on workshop organization: assistants prepared studies, transfers, and supporting passages under Raphael’s direction. The project became a key reference point for what was and was not finished by the master versus his pupils.
At the Villa Farnesina, Raphael’s large decorative schemes relied heavily on assistants working from his designs. The project shows how Raphael’s workshop style could be applied consistently across complex interiors, combining figure painting and ornamental systems. This kind of coordinated production trained pupils to carry the “Raphaelesque” look into their later careers.
After 1520, Raphael’s assistants—especially Giulio Romano, Gianfrancesco Penni, and Raffaellino del Colle—finished the decoration of the Hall of Constantine in the Vatican (completed across 1520–1524). These frescoes show how pupils used Raphael’s designs while also moving toward newer, more complex styles associated with Mannerism. The room became a visible public marker of “Raphael after Raphael.”
Raphael died on April 6, 1520, leaving major projects in progress and a large circle of trained assistants. His death shifted the workshop’s role from supporting a living master to preserving and extending his style through completions, copies, and prints. This transition is central to how Raphael’s influence continued after 1520.
Soon after Raphael’s death, Transfiguration was displayed in connection with his funeral rites and remained central to his posthumous reputation. In 1523, Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici installed it on the high altar of San Pietro in Montorio. Penni was also ordered to make a copy, showing how workshop replication helped extend the painting’s impact.
In 1524, Giulio Romano left Rome for Mantua to serve the Gonzaga court. His move carried Raphael’s workshop methods—strong design, figure types, and decorative systems—into a new political and artistic center. This helped shift “Raphael’s style” from a Roman workshop product into a broader Italian and European court language.
After Giulio Romano’s departure, Gianfrancesco Penni remained an important keeper of Raphael’s workshop models. In October 1524, Penni was commissioned to supply designs for tapestries of the Life of Christ for the Vatican, drawing heavily on Raphael’s visual “treasury.” This shows dissemination not only through prints, but also through large-scale textile programs based on workshop designs.
By 1525, Raphael’s former assistants were producing major works on their own while still using his compositional habits and figure types. Penni is associated with continuing large commissions (including Monteluce projects dated to 1525), while Giulio Romano was establishing an influential court practice in Mantua. This period shows Raphael’s style becoming a transferable “school,” sustained by pupils and reproducible media like prints.
