Sociology teacher Peter D. Martin started City Lights magazine in San Francisco, using it to publish emerging local writers and critics. The magazine created a community and a recognizable name that would soon shift from a periodical to a physical gathering place.
Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin opened City Lights in San Francisco’s North Beach as a paperback-only bookstore—often described as the first all-paperback bookstore in the United States. The store’s affordable, browse-friendly model helped make new writing easier to encounter outside universities and major East Coast publishers.
Peter D. Martin sold his share of the bookstore to Ferlinghetti, leaving Ferlinghetti in control of the shop’s direction. This change mattered because it set up City Lights to move from bookselling into publishing, with an emphasis on new, unconventional voices.
City Lights launched the Pocket Poets Series as small, inexpensive paperbacks designed for wide circulation. The first title was Ferlinghetti’s Pictures of the Gone World, helping define the series’ mission: portable poetry that could reach readers beyond elite literary channels.
Allen Ginsberg’s public reading of “Howl” at the Six Gallery in San Francisco became a key Beat Generation moment, drawing strong reactions and attention. Soon after, Ferlinghetti contacted Ginsberg about publishing the poem—linking City Lights directly to a work that would define its national reputation.
City Lights published Howl and Other Poems as Pocket Poets number 4, bringing Ginsberg’s poem to a much broader audience. The publication helped establish the Pocket Poets Series as a major outlet for Beat writing and for literary work that larger publishers often avoided.
U.S. customs officials seized imported copies of Howl and Other Poems, and San Francisco police soon arrested City Lights staff and Ferlinghetti on obscenity charges. The case turned a local paperback press into a national symbol of debates over censorship and literary freedom.
In October 1957, Judge Clayton W. Horn found Howl and Other Poems not obscene, emphasizing the book’s social importance. The decision strengthened First Amendment protections for literary publishing and removed a major legal threat hanging over City Lights’ work.
City Lights published Gregory Corso’s Gasoline as Pocket Poets number 8, signaling that the series was not a one-author platform but a widening Beat network. By keeping books short and affordable, the series helped emerging poets circulate alongside already-noticed figures like Ginsberg.
The late-1950s Pocket Poets list included translated and international work (such as Jacques Prévert and collections of young German poets). This editorial direction reinforced Ferlinghetti’s stated aim to publish broadly and avoid a narrowly “provincial” or strictly academic poetry scene.
In 1961, City Lights published Ginsberg’s Kaddish and Other Poems as Pocket Poets number 14. This showed that the series could sustain major Beat writers beyond a single breakthrough book, and it kept their new work in a format meant for everyday readers.
City Lights published Frank O’Hara’s Lunch Poems as Pocket Poets number 19, bringing a leading New York School poet into the lineup. The choice signaled that Pocket Poets was becoming a wider “modern poetry” channel—still friendly to Beats, but not limited to them.
City Lights published Bob Kaufman’s Golden Sardine as Pocket Poets number 21, preserving the work of a jazz-influenced poet known for oral performance and street readings. The book helped document a side of Beat culture that often lived more in live speech than in conventional manuscripts.
Philip Lamantia’s Selected Poems 1943–1966 appeared as Pocket Poets number 20, reflecting how City Lights began consolidating and curating earlier avant-garde work as the 1960s progressed. The publication placed a longer view of the San Francisco scene into the same low-cost format used for new writing.
In 1968, City Lights published Ginsberg’s Planet News as Pocket Poets number 23. The book reflects how the series increasingly intersected with the political and antiwar energies of the late 1960s, while still using the small-paperback model established in the mid-1950s.
Robert Bly’s The Teeth-Mother Naked at Last appeared as Pocket Poets number 26 in 1970, marking how far the series had traveled from its Beat-centered beginnings. By this point, City Lights’ paperback poetry line had become a durable institution: born from a bookstore community, tested in court, and expanded into a broader modern and politically engaged poetry list.
