In late 1966, the Diggers began regular “Free Food” servings in the Panhandle near Haight-Ashbury. These were not just meals; they were meant to challenge everyday ideas about property and money by making sharing public and normal. This approach laid groundwork for later free stores and mutual-aid services during the Summer of Love.
The Human Be-In was held at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park, bringing together tens of thousands of people. The gathering showcased music, speeches, and the emerging “psychedelic” style that many outsiders would soon associate with Haight-Ashbury. Heavy media attention helped turn a local scene into a national symbol, setting the stage for the Summer of Love.
The Mantra-Rock Dance took place at the Avalon Ballroom as a benefit linked to the Hare Krishna movement. Major local bands participated, and the event highlighted how music venues could also serve as community gathering spaces where spirituality and counterculture mixed. It showed the Haight-area scene’s ability to mobilize crowds for causes beyond entertainment.
As the Haight-Ashbury drew more visitors, city officials faced pressure from residents worried about conditions on public transit passing through the neighborhood. In late March 1967, the city’s transit system rerouted Haight Street buses away from the district on weekends and holidays. The change reflected early civic backlash and hinted at growing tension between the counterculture and city governance.
Organizers held a press conference to announce the formation of a “Council for the Summer of Love.” The council aimed to coordinate events and prepare for large numbers of young people expected to travel to San Francisco. This step helped turn a loosely connected local movement into a planned season of high-visibility gatherings.
As more young people arrived in the neighborhood, medical needs grew quickly, including injuries, illness, and drug-related crises. The Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic opened at 558 Clayton Street to provide free, nonjudgmental care during the Summer of Love. It became a model for later free clinics by treating health care as a community service rather than a paid commodity.
The Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival was held in Marin County as a large, multi-act outdoor event. It is often described as the first in a series of San Francisco–area cultural events that became known as the Summer of Love. The festival model—daytime crowds, multiple performers, and a shared countercultural atmosphere—helped define the season’s public style.
The Monterey International Pop Festival took place over three days and drew major national attention to new rock and psychedelic performers. The festival is widely remembered as a key early moment in the “Summer of Love,” helping spread the Bay Area’s countercultural image far beyond San Francisco. This broader visibility also increased the flow of visitors into Haight-Ashbury.
During the Summer of Love, the Diggers expanded “free store” activity—spaces where people could take clothing and household goods without paying. These stores were practical responses to overcrowding and poverty, but they also carried a political message: daily life could be organized around sharing rather than buying and selling. The idea influenced later communal and mutual-aid experiments beyond the Haight.
On October 6, 1967, Haight-Ashbury residents and the Diggers staged a mock funeral called “Death of Hippie.” The event aimed to push back against commercialization and constant media attention, and it sent a clear message that the neighborhood could not absorb endless new arrivals. Symbolically, it marked the end of the Summer of Love as a hopeful mass experiment in Haight-Ashbury.
The San Francisco Oracle ceased publication in February 1968 after 12 issues. Its end reflected a broader transition: Haight-Ashbury was no longer a small, manageable community experiment, and the atmosphere of 1967 had changed. As key media and organizers moved on, the center of gravity for alternative living increasingly shifted toward smaller communes and new locations.
