The San Francisco Oracle began publishing as an underground newspaper in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. The Diggers opened an early “free store,” offering goods without charge as a practical experiment in mutual aid (neighbors supporting each other directly). These projects modeled how a community might meet needs outside the cash economy. The approach influenced later commune thinking about shared resources and “free” public services.
In Sonoma County, Lou Gottlieb opened Morning Star Ranch under the principle “Land Access To Which Is Denied No One” (LATWIDNO). The ranch became a major “open land” experiment where many people tried low-cost rural living, often with improvised shelters. It also linked city-based mutual aid (like free food) with rural communal space.
Twin Oaks was founded as an intentional community that pursued cooperation and income-sharing (members share resources and do work for the group). Unlike many short-lived communes, Twin Oaks developed systems for labor and decision-making that helped it persist. Its early survival made it an important reference point for later U.S. communal experiments.
Land for the New Buffalo commune was purchased in 1967, and the community became a notable “back-to-the-land” experiment near Arroyo Hondo. Residents tried to build a self-sufficient life, but also relied at times on outside income and seasonal work. Its story reflected a common pattern: strong ideals, rapid growth, and constant turnover.
The Human Be-In brought a large crowd to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and helped make the counterculture visible to a national audience. It encouraged ideas about new social forms, including communal living and shared spiritual practice. The event is widely described as a major prelude to the Summer of Love.
Organizers held a press conference announcing a “Council for the Summer of Love,” aiming to coordinate services and messaging as large numbers of young people arrived in San Francisco. The announcement reflected a shift from small scenes to mass participation. It also highlighted the need for support systems when informal communities suddenly grew.
The Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic opened to provide free health care during the Summer of Love. It addressed urgent needs tied to overcrowding, substance use, and limited access to services. The clinic became an influential model for the wider U.S. free clinic movement.
On October 6, 1967, organizers staged a mock funeral called “Death of Hippie” in Haight-Ashbury. The event protested commercialization and signaled that the neighborhood’s scene was breaking under media attention and crowds. For many participants, it helped push the movement toward smaller, more sustainable communities outside the spotlight.
Stewart Brand launched the Whole Earth Catalog, promoting “access to tools” for people building alternative lives, including in communes. It reviewed books, equipment, and practical resources for housing, farming, and crafts. The catalog helped turn scattered experiments into a more connected national “back-to-the-land” culture.
The New Alchemy Institute was founded to research practical, small-scale systems for food, water, and shelter, including organic agriculture and renewable-energy ideas. This work overlapped with commune goals: living with fewer resources while meeting basic needs. It helped translate countercultural values into testable designs and published findings that others could copy.
A group led by Stephen Gaskin formed a traveling community and then bought land in Tennessee, founding The Farm in 1971. The Farm became a high-profile intentional community built around shared work, spiritual practice, and a low-consumption lifestyle. Its creation showed how “commune” efforts shifted from short summer gatherings to long-term settlement and institution-building.
Wheeler Ranch in Sonoma County became a major refuge for commune living after earlier open-land experiments faced enforcement pressure. On May 18, 1973, county bulldozers destroyed structures on the property, forcing residents to leave and ending the ranch as a functioning commune. The event illustrated a key limit of the 1967–1975 commune wave: conflicts with zoning, health codes, and local government power.
In 1975, construction began on the “Ark” bioshelter project in Prince Edward Island, drawing on New Alchemy Institute research. A bioshelter is a solar greenhouse designed to support living systems—food, waste cycling, and energy use—in a single integrated structure. While not a U.S. commune, it reflected how commune-era ideas moved into funded research and demonstration projects by the mid-1970s.
