In 1960, Harvard psychologists Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert began controlled studies of psychedelic substances, initially focusing on psilocybin while LSD remained legal in the U.S. Their work framed psychedelics as tools to study perception, emotion, and consciousness, attracting attention well beyond academic psychology.
In early 1961, Leary’s group started a study at Concord State Prison to test whether psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy could reduce recidivism (returning to prison after release). The experiment became an early, high-profile example of using psychedelics in a structured setting aimed at behavior change.
In March 1962, members of Harvard’s Center for Research in Personality criticized Leary and Alpert’s drug experiments as unscientific and irresponsible in a closed meeting. The dispute pushed Harvard toward stricter rules, including a pledge not to administer psychedelics to undergraduates and added oversight on administration conditions.
On April 20, 1962 (Good Friday), Walter Pahnke ran the Marsh Chapel Experiment at Boston University under the supervision of Leary and Alpert. The double-blind design compared psilocybin with an active placebo, asking whether psychedelics could reliably produce experiences resembling classic mystical reports in religious participants.
On October 10, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed the Kefauver–Harris Amendments, which strengthened FDA oversight and required proof of both safety and effectiveness for drugs. While not aimed specifically at psychedelics, the law reflected a broader shift toward stricter evidence standards and regulation in biomedicine.
On May 27, 1963, Harvard terminated Richard Alpert’s appointment after he gave a hallucinogen to an undergraduate, violating an agreement with the university. The decision marked a turning point: the controversy became a public symbol of blurred lines between research, personal advocacy, and student safety.
In 1963, Timothy Leary also lost his Harvard position amid the widening scandal and administrative actions. Their removal from Harvard helped shift psychedelic activity away from mainstream academic settings and toward independent networks that were more visible—and more politically vulnerable.
After leaving Harvard, Leary and colleagues created organizations and communities associated with the Millbrook estate in New York, promoting psychedelic use as part of consciousness exploration. This highly visible phase helped push LSD into wider public discussion, blending spiritual, therapeutic, and countercultural aims in ways critics saw as recruitment.
In 1964, Leary, Ralph Metzner, and Richard Alpert published The Psychedelic Experience, a guide modeled on the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The book popularized ideas about preparing the mind and environment for psychedelic sessions (“set and setting”) and contributed to LSD’s growing public identity beyond clinical research.
On July 15, 1965, the Drug Abuse Control Amendments became U.S. law, strengthening federal regulation of certain drugs and expanding enforcement capacity. This legal shift signaled that hallucinogens and stimulants were increasingly being treated as public-order and public-health concerns, not just research substances.
In a letter dated August 23, 1965, a senior Sandoz official described steps taken in response to growing problems surrounding LSD and documented the company’s decision to halt distribution. Ending routine supply from the original manufacturer made legitimate access harder for many researchers and highlighted the shift from medical promise to public controversy.
A California law took effect on October 6, 1966, making LSD illegal in the state—the first statewide ban in the U.S. The change encouraged a more confrontational dynamic between psychedelic communities and law enforcement, and it foreshadowed broader criminalization to come.
In 1967, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Bureau of Drug Abuse Control distributed The Mind-Benders, an educational film about hallucinogens that emphasized hazards while also acknowledging claimed therapeutic uses. Government-produced media like this reflected a new phase: psychedelics were increasingly framed for the public as a social risk requiring enforcement and prevention, not open-ended experimentation.
LSD Research, Publicity, and Backlash (1959–1967)
