In 1959, psychologist Timothy Leary arrived at Harvard as a lecturer. Soon after, he and Richard Alpert (later known as Ram Dass) began organized research into psilocybin, a hallucinogen found in certain mushrooms. This shift set the stage for Leary’s move from academic work to public psychedelic advocacy.
Leary and Alpert’s Harvard Psilocybin Project began in 1960 and drew attention for exploring how psychedelics affected consciousness. The work mixed psychology with spiritual and philosophical questions, and it used volunteer subjects in controlled settings. Faculty concerns about safety and research rigor grew as the project expanded.
In February 1961, Leary’s team launched the Concord Prison Experiment at Concord State Prison in Massachusetts. The study tested whether psilocybin combined with psychotherapy could help incarcerated people change behavior and avoid returning to prison. The experiment became one of the best-known early attempts at psychedelic-assisted therapy.
On April 20, 1962, the Marsh Chapel (Good Friday) Experiment took place during a religious service at Boston University. Designed by Walter Pahnke and supervised by Leary, Alpert, and the Harvard Psilocybin Project, it tested whether psilocybin could reliably produce experiences described as mystical. The study became a landmark in discussions about psychedelics and religion.
After leaving Harvard, Leary and colleagues established a communal research and retreat scene at the Hitchcock Estate in Millbrook, New York, sometimes organized through groups such as the Castalia Foundation. The estate became a hub where supporters explored psychedelics and promoted new spiritual and social ideas. Millbrook also drew growing law-enforcement attention as LSD culture spread.
By 1962, Harvard administrators and faculty criticized the project’s methods and safety practices, including researchers taking the drugs during sessions. In May 1963, Harvard dismissed Leary and Alpert, ending their university roles. The firing helped push Leary’s psychedelic message out of academia and into public counterculture.
In 1964, Leary, Ralph Metzner, and Richard Alpert published The Psychedelic Experience, a guide for navigating psychedelic sessions. The book emphasized “set and setting,” meaning mindset and environment, as key factors shaping outcomes. It helped turn psychedelic use into a teachable practice, not just a private experience.
On December 22, 1965, U.S. customs officials stopped Leary’s car at Laredo, Texas, after he returned from a trip toward Mexico. The search found marijuana-related items, leading to a federal prosecution that would later reach the U.S. Supreme Court. The case tied Leary’s public image to drug-law conflict, not only to culture and research.
On September 19, 1966, Leary reorganized his activism into the League for Spiritual Discovery, presenting LSD as a religious sacrament. This strategy aimed to argue for legal protection through religious freedom, drawing parallels to older religious exemptions for substances like peyote. The move marked a clear shift from research claims to overt political and legal campaigning.
On October 6, 1966, California’s ban on LSD went into effect, making it the first U.S. state to prohibit the drug. That same day in San Francisco, the Love Pageant Rally protested the ban and defended psychedelic culture. These events signaled that drug policy and psychedelic identity were becoming a public political battle.
On January 14, 1967, the Human Be-In brought thousands to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and helped launch the “Summer of Love.” Leary used the gathering to amplify his message, including the slogan “turn on, tune in, drop out.” The event helped move psychedelics from small circles into mass youth culture.
In Leary v. United States (1969), the U.S. Supreme Court addressed constitutional issues tied to Leary’s marijuana conviction under federal drug laws. The decision undermined parts of the legal framework used against him, showing how drug prosecutions could collide with constitutional protections. Even so, law enforcement pressure on Leary continued through other cases.
On December 26, 1968, Laguna Beach police arrested Leary for marijuana possession, a case that became central to later sentencing. In March 1970, he was convicted in California and sentenced under state law, locking in a major legal defeat for his movement. The outcome reinforced how quickly psychedelic advocacy could translate into severe criminal penalties.
On September 12, 1970, Leary escaped from the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo County after being assigned to lower-security work. His escape was aided by supporters, and it immediately became a national story tied to radical politics and the underground. The event pushed his “campaign” into open flight from the U.S. justice system.
After moving through several countries while evading capture, Leary and Joanna Harcourt-Smith traveled to Afghanistan. U.S. authorities arrested Leary at the Kabul airport on January 17, 1973, ending his period as an international fugitive. The arrest effectively closed the most public, mobile phase of his 1960–1972 psychedelic campaigning.
