In early 1960, the Student League for Industrial Democracy (SLID) reconstituted itself as Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to broaden its appeal beyond labor-focused student activism. The group’s early center was Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan, where organizers began building a new kind of student-led political organization.
At SDS’s first meeting at the University of Michigan in 1960, Alan Haber was elected as the organization’s first president. This helped formalize SDS as a national student project and provided an early public face for its organizing.
At SDS’s first national convention near Port Huron, Michigan, members completed the Port Huron Statement, largely drafted by Tom Hayden. The document argued for “participatory democracy,” meaning ordinary people should have a real voice in the decisions shaping their lives, and it criticized racism, Cold War militarism, and political complacency.
In the mid-1960s, SDS expanded from campus discussions into community-based organizing through the Economic Research and Action Project (ERAP). ERAP aimed to work with low-income communities on practical issues—like housing, welfare rights, and local services—testing whether a student-led organization could help build lasting grassroots power beyond universities.
The 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom showed the scale and influence of mass protest in the civil rights era. SDS members operated in this wider movement environment, where student activism increasingly connected racial justice demands with broader calls for social and economic change.
In 1965, SDS broke its formal connection with its parent organization, the League for Industrial Democracy (LID). The split reflected SDS’s desire for independence as it grew more prominent in New Left politics and increasingly challenged Cold War liberal consensus.
On April 17, 1965, SDS held a major march against the Vietnam War in Washington, D.C., widely described as its first large national antiwar demonstration. The event helped move antiwar activism from scattered campus concerns into a visible national movement and raised SDS’s profile as an organizing hub.
On October 21, 1967, about 100,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the March on the Pentagon, reflecting how quickly antiwar protest had grown. SDS was part of the broader ecosystem of organizations pushing public opposition to U.S. involvement in Vietnam into major national headlines.
On April 23, 1968, Columbia University protesters—led in part by Columbia’s SDS chapter working alongside Black student activists—began building occupations that became a major campus revolt. The protests connected local issues (like a planned gym in Morningside Park) with opposition to university ties to defense research, showing how student movements could challenge institutional power directly.
In August 1968, large antiwar demonstrations during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago led to violent clashes with police and National Guard units, widely broadcast on television. SDS was among the groups present, and the events intensified debates inside the movement about tactics, coalition-building, and how to respond to state repression.
In June 1969, SDS’s national convention in Chicago became the organization’s last, as internal factional conflict overwhelmed the group’s ability to act as a unified movement. Major blocs competed for control, and the split left SDS “gutted” as a national organization, even where local chapters continued activism in other forms.
From October 8–11, 1969, the “Days of Rage” in Chicago—organized by the emerging Weatherman faction—signaled a shift by some former SDS leaders toward confrontational street action. The event drew far fewer participants than hoped and resulted in arrests and injuries, highlighting how SDS’s fragmentation helped push parts of the movement away from mass campus organizing and into smaller, more radical offshoots.
