Reddit launched in June 2005 as a user-submitted link and voting site, built by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. Early on, the core idea was that the community would surface what mattered through votes, setting the stage for later subreddit-based cultures.
On June 23, 2005, an early user (ChickenLittle) submitted what is often cited as Reddit’s first post. The moment is a useful marker for how quickly the site moved from an idea to a working community feed.
In December 2005, Reddit added comments, turning link-sharing into threaded discussion. This feature made it possible for communities to develop recognizable in-jokes, norms, and status systems inside each thread.
On October 31, 2006, Condé Nast (via Wired Digital/CondéNet) acquired Reddit and the small team moved to San Francisco. The acquisition put Reddit inside a major media company while its user culture stayed strongly community-driven.
By 2006–2007, major topical spaces such as r/science and r/politics were becoming strong identity hubs, beyond the main front page. These early “rooms” helped establish the idea that different parts of Reddit could have different norms and interests.
On January 22, 2008, Reddit introduced (in closed beta) the ability for users to create their own “reddits,” later known as subreddits. This shift mattered because it moved community formation from staff-led categories to user-led community creation and governance.
On January 25, 2008, r/AskReddit was created as a place for open-ended questions and broad conversation. It became a major pathway for new users to learn Reddit’s tone and etiquette through high-volume participation.
In June 2008, Reddit announced it was open-sourcing almost all of the code behind the site, including major parts of how content was ranked. This reinforced a culture of transparency and hacker-oriented participation, while also highlighting risks like gaming the ranking system.
In 2009, RedditGifts launched as a user-to-user gift exchange, showing how subreddit culture could spill into real-world exchanges and trust systems. Projects like this helped build the idea of Reddit as a network of communities, not only a news feed.
In May 2009, r/IAmA was created to host “Ask Me Anything” interviews, with identity proof required for guests. The format helped Reddit communities interact with public figures and made moderation and verification practices more visible to everyday users.
By 2010, unofficial mobile apps such as Alien Blue became popular ways to browse and post on Reddit. This mattered for subreddit culture because mobile use increased daily participation and helped shape how people read, comment, and moderate on the go.
On January 16, 2013, r/changemyview launched with rules designed to encourage civil, evidence-based disagreement. It became a well-known example of how subreddit-specific rules and rewards can shape behavior differently from the rest of the platform.
In October 2011, Reddit set a lineup of “default subreddits” that new users saw automatically, influencing what communities grew fastest. In July 2013, Reddit changed the defaults for the first time since 2011, signaling ongoing debate about what kind of culture the platform should promote.
On July 2, 2015, many large subreddits went private in protest after Reddit employee Victoria Taylor—who helped coordinate AMAs—was fired. The blackout highlighted a core tension in subreddit culture formation: volunteer moderators do much of the governance work, but platform decisions can abruptly change how communities function.
