A prominent Second Life avatar, Anshe Chung, became widely known for building wealth through virtual real estate—buying, developing, and renting land. The story helped publicize Second Life’s virtual economy and encouraged more residents to treat in-world creation as serious business.
Second Life hit a major registration milestone: one million user accounts. The surge highlighted how mainstream attention could quickly expand an online world, bringing more customers and creators into its marketplace—but also more disputes over norms, safety, and ownership.
A tool known as CopyBot sparked outrage because it could be used to duplicate virtual goods, threatening creators who sold items for Linden Dollars. Protests and store shutdowns pushed Linden Lab to treat the use of CopyBot for unauthorized copying as a Terms of Service violation, underscoring how intellectual property disputes became central to Second Life’s economy.
News coverage in late 2006 promoted the idea of a “virtual millionaire”—someone whose in-world assets could be converted into real-world money. This moment became symbolic of Second Life’s virtual economy, even as it raised questions about valuation, risk, and who could realistically profit.
Linden Lab banned games that involved wagering and relied on chance or random number generation, including many casino-style activities. This policy shift was a major turning point because gambling had been a visible part of the in-world economy, and the ban forced businesses and communities to adapt or shut down.
After high-profile failures of resident-run “banks,” Linden Lab prohibited in-world banking objects that offered interest or investment returns without proof of real-world financial registration. The move aimed to protect residents and the platform’s reputation, but it also narrowed what kinds of financial experiments could operate inside the virtual economy.
Linden Lab announced changes to how adult content would be labeled, searched, and accessed, including plans for updated policies and access controls. This set the stage for reshaping where adult-themed communities and businesses could operate, and how identity expression would be managed in public versus restricted spaces.
Linden Lab opened Zindra, a dedicated adult-only continent, as part of the Adult Content Initiative and introduced a clearer ratings approach (General/Moderate/Adult). Moving adult businesses and venues into a defined area changed Second Life’s social geography and helped the broader economy present itself as more brand- and institution-friendly.
The Adult Content Initiative’s transition period ended, completing a major governance shift in how content and communities were organized. By late 2009, Second Life’s economy and social movements operated under tighter rules around adult content, following earlier crackdowns on gambling and unregulated banking.
By 2009, Second Life’s user-to-user transactions and market activity were often discussed as a large, growing virtual-goods economy. This period closed an era (2003–2010) in which the platform’s culture matured from early experimentation into a rule-governed system balancing resident creativity with policies meant to limit fraud and legal risk.
