FanFiction.Net launched as one of the first large, multi-fandom websites where people could post and read fanfiction in one place. Its scale helped normalize online fanfiction as a mainstream youth writing activity and set expectations for searchable categories and community interaction. Later debates about rules, moderation, and control on big platforms shaped interest in fan-run alternatives.
FanLib drew widespread attention in fandom as a for-profit attempt to showcase and monetize fanfiction. Many fans worried commercialization could increase legal risk for writers and shift control away from community norms. The controversy helped strengthen arguments for a noncommercial, fan-run archive.
LiveJournal permanently suspended hundreds of journals after targeting certain interest terms, which many users experienced as sudden and unclear enforcement. The incident became known as “Strikethrough” (followed by further protests often grouped as “Boldthrough”). For fanfiction communities—many of them teen-heavy—this highlighted how quickly a hosting platform could remove content and networks.
The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) was incorporated as a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit to support and defend fan-created “transformative works” (works that build on existing media in new ways, such as fanfiction). OTW’s goals included preserving fan culture, supporting legal advocacy, and reducing dependence on commercial platforms. This provided an organizational base for building a dedicated fanworks archive.
FanLib announced it would close and then shut down, after operating for roughly a year. For many fans, the rise-and-fall reinforced a lesson: commercial platforms can change direction or disappear quickly. This fed support for building long-term, nonprofit infrastructure for fanworks.
OTW launched Transformative Works and Cultures (TWC), a peer-reviewed open-access journal focused on fanworks and fan practices. Having a formal scholarly venue helped legitimize fandom as a topic of study and made it easier to cite and share research about online fan communities. This academic visibility ran alongside AO3’s technical build-out.
OTW began building Archive of Our Own (AO3) as a nonprofit, open-source archive designed around fan needs rather than advertiser or publisher demands. The project emphasized stability, user control, and a broad definition of allowed fanworks, with clear labeling tools so readers could make informed choices. This marked a shift from “where fans can post” to “how fans can preserve and organize their culture.”
AO3 launched into open beta, meaning the site was publicly available while still being actively developed. The beta approach let volunteers scale up infrastructure, refine policies, and test features with real users. For many teen fan writers, AO3 offered a new home built specifically for fanfiction and other fanworks.
The Yuletide rare-fandom exchange (a yearly gift exchange for small fandoms) ran on AO3 for the first time. OTW framed it as the first major use of new “Collections and Challenges” code, which supports events and organized posting. Big community events helped bring new users—many of them younger writers—into AO3’s ecosystem.
In its 2009 annual report, OTW described how AO3 added accounts and fanworks quickly after open beta began, then continued growing through the end of the year. The report also reflects a “stress test” mindset: growth was managed to keep servers stable. This period helped establish AO3 as a serious, durable alternative to older hosting options.
AO3 required invitations for account creation, including an invitation queue that asked users to confirm they were at least 13 years old. The queue helped control server load while the archive scaled, and it signaled a more formal approach to privacy and platform responsibilities. This structure shaped how teen communities joined and spread access through peer networks.
TIME included Archive of Our Own in its “50 Best Websites 2013,” highlighting its organization and browsing tools. Mainstream media recognition signaled that fanfiction platforms had become culturally visible beyond fandom itself. This broader attention also pointed to how teen-driven online writing communities were shaping digital culture.
In 2015, the U.S. Copyright Office (through the Library of Congress rulemaking for the DMCA) expanded and renewed exemptions that protect certain noncommercial uses of video clips, including criticism and comment. OTW’s advocacy work is often discussed in connection with these exemptions, which matter to fan creators making remixes and commentary. Although AO3 is primarily known for text, the legal climate also shaped how safe fans felt publishing transformative work online.
