The April 6 Youth Movement, founded in 2008 to support workers’ strike action, became one of Egypt’s best-known youth activist groups. It helped normalize using social media for organizing and publicizing protests and arrests. By 2011, these skills and connections supported rapid mass mobilization.
In 2010, Wael Ghonim helped create the Facebook page “We Are All Khaled Said,” which turned outrage about police violence into organized online campaigning. The page helped spread protest tactics like coordinated events and public messaging. It later became a key platform encouraging participation on January 25, 2011.
On June 6, 2010, Alexandrian man Khaled Said died after a violent encounter with police, becoming a symbol of police brutality. Photos and accounts of his death helped push anger about abuse into wider public view. Youth-led online activism that followed created networks and slogans later used in the 2011 uprising.
On January 18, 2011, activist Asmaa Mahfouz posted a video urging Egyptians—especially young people—to protest on January 25. The message linked personal dignity to collective action and argued that showing up in public mattered more than fear. This kind of direct, youth-led communication helped accelerate turnout.
On January 25, 2011, protests broke out in multiple Egyptian cities, including Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez, timed with National Police Day. Youth movements and opposition groups helped publicize the demonstrations and early demands focused on police abuse and political limits. The protests quickly grew into a broader call for President Hosni Mubarak to step down.
On January 28, 2011, authorities ordered major internet service providers to shut down connectivity as mass demonstrations expanded. The shutdown aimed to disrupt coordination and information sharing, but protests continued in the streets. The episode highlighted both the importance of online organizing and the limits of trying to stop it through blackout tactics.
On February 2, 2011, pro-Mubarak groups attacked protesters in Tahrir Square using sticks, stones, and improvised weapons; some attackers rode horses and camels. The violence killed and injured many people and became a turning point in public opinion. Instead of ending the sit-in, it strengthened many protesters’ determination to stay until Mubarak left.
On February 11, 2011, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that President Hosni Mubarak had stepped down after 18 days of mass protest. Power shifted to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), which promised a transition to elected civilian rule. Youth activists celebrated the victory but soon faced new debates about how to protect the revolution’s goals.
On February 13, 2011, SCAF suspended the constitution and dissolved Egypt’s parliament, formally placing the military at the center of the transition. The move reshaped the political playing field and raised fears that emergency-style governance could continue under new leadership. Activists increasingly shifted from “topple Mubarak” to “hold the transition accountable.”
On March 19, 2011, Egyptians voted in a referendum on constitutional amendments, with about 77% voting “yes.” The amendments included presidential term limits and changes to election rules meant to structure the transition. Youth and political groups split over whether the referendum moved too quickly toward elections before deeper reforms.
On October 9–10, 2011, protests near the Maspero state television building ended in deadly clashes, with many victims among Coptic demonstrators. The event became a symbol of rising insecurity and tensions during the military-led transition. For many youth activists, it reinforced concerns about accountability for violence and the limits of the post-Mubarak system.
On November 28, 2011, Egypt began staggered parliamentary elections that ran into January 2012. These were widely described as the first relatively competitive national elections in decades, but they also took place amid continuing protests and distrust of military rule. The results shifted political power toward organized parties, including Islamist groups, more than toward loosely organized youth coalitions.
On June 24, 2012, Egypt’s election commission announced that Mohamed Morsi won the presidential runoff, and he was sworn in on June 30. The outcome marked a major shift: a civilian president chosen through a competitive vote after Mubarak’s fall. Youth activists who helped launch the uprising now faced a harder question—how to influence governing, not just protest.
In December 2012, Egypt held a two-round referendum that approved a new constitution with about 63.8% support, on turnout around one-third of eligible voters. Opponents argued the drafting process and content favored Islamist political forces and did not adequately protect rights. The vote deepened divisions, including among young revolutionaries who had once shared common goals in 2011.
In April 2013, young activists launched Tamarod (“rebellion”), a petition campaign calling for Morsi’s resignation and early elections. The campaign helped mobilize large nationwide demonstrations on June 30, 2013, the first anniversary of Morsi’s inauguration. Youth activism again proved decisive in setting the agenda, but the political stakes now centered on removing an elected government.
On July 3, 2013, the military ousted President Morsi, suspended the constitution, and announced a new political roadmap. This marked a decisive end to the post-January 25 transition as first imagined by many youth activists: civilian, accountable governance built through popular mobilization. What followed was a harsher political environment, with shrinking space for street protest and independent organizing.
