Harlem YMCA opens as a new community hub
Labels: Harlem YMCA, West 135thThe West 135th Street Branch YMCA opened in Harlem, creating a major new center for African American men and boys at a time when mainstream YMCA facilities were segregated. Beyond recreation, it offered education-oriented programming such as lectures and classes, helping the YMCA become part of Harlem’s growing civic and cultural infrastructure. This set up a stable, year-round institution that could support the artistic and social activity that soon became known as the Harlem Renaissance.
