In 1504, Thomas More entered Parliament, beginning a public career that ran alongside his work as a scholar and lawyer. Around this time he also moved in reform-minded church and academic networks that helped shape English Christian humanism—an effort to join classical learning with serious Christian morality.
From September 1510, More served as one of London’s undersheriffs, a demanding legal office sometimes described as a day-to-day workhorse of city government. The role strengthened his reputation as a fair judge and skilled administrator, and it grounded his humanist ideals in practical questions about law, poverty, and civic order.
In 1511, Desiderius Erasmus published Praise of Folly, a sharp satire that criticized social and church abuses while still arguing for reform from within Christian tradition. The book helped define the tone of northern Christian humanism—witty, text-focused, and morally serious—and it formed part of the shared intellectual world More participated in.
Between about 1513 and 1518, More wrote History of King Richard III in both Latin and English. The work used humanist methods—careful reading, moral interpretation, and attention to politics—to explore how power can be gained and abused. It also showed how classical-style history writing could serve ethical reflection in Tudor England.
In 1515, More traveled on a diplomatic and trade mission to the Low Countries. During this work he began drafting what became Utopia, using a fictional travel narrative to debate corruption, punishment, war, and the responsibilities of rulers and citizens. The setting helped connect English humanism with wider European humanist networks.
In late 1516, More’s Utopia was published in Latin. The book became a landmark of Christian humanist debate because it used an imagined society to ask what justice, religious practice, and public welfare should look like. It also helped popularize the very idea of a “utopia” as a tool for criticizing real societies.
In 1517, More was drawn into royal service as a member of the king’s council, and from October he was known as Master of Requests. This moved him from city administration into national politics, where Christian humanist ideals had to compete with dynastic strategy, foreign policy, and court factions. The shift set the stage for later conflicts between conscience and royal policy.
In 1521, More was made under-treasurer and was knighted, reflecting his rising importance in Henry VIII’s government. His advancement showed how English Christian humanism could align with state service—at least while policy and religious unity still seemed compatible. It also placed him closer to decisions about religious controversy and royal authority.
In April 1523, More was elected Speaker of the House of Commons. The position highlighted his standing as a leading lawyer and statesman, and it showed the influence of educated humanists within Tudor government. It also placed him at the intersection of parliamentary politics and the religious debates that were growing across Europe.
In June 1529, More’s A Dialogue Concerning Heresies was first published, defending Catholic teaching against emerging Protestant arguments. The work shows a key tension in English Christian humanism: it valued learning, languages, and persuasion, but it also aimed to protect religious unity and traditional practices such as the use of religious images. This period marks More’s turn from ideal-state satire to direct polemical conflict.
On October 25, 1529, More became Lord Chancellor, the kingdom’s highest legal officer, succeeding Cardinal Wolsey. The appointment made him a central figure in the government just as Henry VIII’s marriage crisis and the question of papal authority were intensifying. More’s chancellorship became a test of whether conscience-based Christian humanism could survive inside a rapidly changing state church policy.
On May 16, 1532, More resigned as Lord Chancellor, returning the Great Seal to the king. He left office as Henry’s government pushed the English Church toward submission to royal control, a direction More could not support. His resignation marked a clear break: public service would no longer be compatible with his understanding of church authority and conscience.
On April 17, 1534, More was imprisoned in the Tower of London after refusing to take required oaths tied to the new religious settlement. In prison he continued writing, including works aimed at spiritual endurance and conscience under pressure. His confinement shows the end point of his political path: a learned statesman whose refusal to endorse royal supremacy became a criminal act.
In 1534, Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy recognizing Henry VIII as “Supreme Head” of the Church of England. The act formalized the break with Rome and required subjects to accept the king’s new religious authority. For More and other Christian humanists who hoped for reform without schism, this changed the political meaning of loyalty and belief.
On July 1, 1535, More was tried and convicted of treason under laws used to enforce the new royal supremacy. The government treated even refusal to affirm the king’s religious title as a threat to the state. The trial demonstrated how quickly humanist debate about reform and governance had become a high-stakes legal conflict.
On July 6, 1535, Thomas More was executed in London. His death became a lasting symbol of conscience-based resistance to state control of religion, and it marked a turning point in English Christian humanism from court-centered reform hopes to a more divided religious landscape. In hindsight, his career shows both the reach and the limits of trying to unite classical learning, Christian ethics, and Tudor governance.
