American minister Moncure D. Conway led the South Place congregation, a period associated with a further move away from Unitarian theology and toward freethought—setting the stage for later ethical-society identity.
Felix Adler founded the Society for Ethical Culture, launching the Ethical Culture / Ethical Movement tradition that would later influence parallel developments in Britain.
Under Stanton Coit’s leadership, the South Place Religious Society was renamed the South Place Ethical Society (SPES), marking an explicit institutional shift toward ethical religion/humanist ethics.
After leaving SPES, Stanton Coit established the West London Ethical Society, which became a major hub for the Ethical Movement and an arena for experiments in “ethical church” style gatherings.
London ethical societies united under Stanton Coit to form the Union of Ethical Societies, creating a national coordinating body that would later become a key ancestor of organized British humanism.
The Union of Ethical Societies adopted the name “Ethical Union,” reflecting consolidation and a clearer national identity for the ethical-society network.
The Ethical Union was incorporated, formalising its legal and organisational status during a period when many local ethical societies were in decline or reorganisation.
Using funds enabled by the earlier sale of the South Place Chapel site and fundraising, SPES began construction of Conway Hall in Red Lion Square, designed to support lectures, concerts, and ethical education.
Conway Hall officially opened, becoming a prominent London venue for ethical, humanist, and freethought programming (education, debate, culture), and the institutional centre for SPES activity.
The South Place Ethical Society affiliated with (joined) the Ethical Union, linking the long-established South Place tradition institutionally with the wider British Ethical Movement’s national body.
Ethical and rationalist leaders collaborated to create the Humanist Council, reflecting post-war convergence between the Ethical Union’s tradition and rationalist publishing/advocacy networks.
