Brummell’s relationship with the Prince of Wales deteriorated and they quarreled, weakening the social protection that had underwritten his credit and his status at the center of fashionable menswear.
A widely repeated account of Brummell’s downfall centers on his remark to Lord Alvanley—“Who’s your fat friend?”—after being snubbed by the Prince Regent, crystallizing his break with royal favor in popular memory.
Mounting gambling and lifestyle debts culminated in Brummell fleeing England for Calais to avoid creditors—ending his direct role in London’s fashion leadership while his tailoring ideals continued to spread.
Through influential friends, Brummell obtained a modest livelihood as British consul at Caen, a late-life episode that underscores how far he had fallen from being the era’s most imitated dresser.
The Caen consulate was abolished, removing Brummell’s small official income and worsening the poverty that marked his final years in France.
Brummell’s continuing financial collapse led to imprisonment for debt, though friends again intervened—an endpoint far removed from the disciplined image his style projected.
After paralytic attacks, Brummell’s health declined severely; he was admitted to the charitable Bon Sauveur asylum in Caen, where he spent his remaining years.
Brummell died in Caen, France. Posthumously, his association with restrained color, immaculate linen, and bespoke fit helped define the long-term template for modern Western men’s tailoring.
