Butterick expanded from selling patterns into publishing fashion periodicals that promoted styles and enabled mail-order purchasing. It also helped build a large consumer market around sewing machines, notions (small sewing supplies), and textiles.
James McCall began designing and printing sewing patterns, adding competition in the rapidly growing home-sewing market. More pattern companies meant more styles, clearer instructions, and wider distribution. That made it easier for households to keep up with fashion even when buying fabric and sewing at home.
In the years when the patent pool dominated licensing, sewing-machine production and sales rose sharply, reaching hundreds of thousands of machines sold annually by the early 1870s. More machines in circulation expanded both home sewing and small-scale garment shops. This growth helped clothing move toward faster, cheaper production and more frequent style changes.
The Sewing Machine Combination lasted until the last major patent in the pool expired. With fewer legal barriers, more firms could make machines without paying pool licensing fees. Increased competition pushed innovation and price pressure, which further expanded access to sewing machines for households and businesses.
By the late 1800s, ready-made garments expanded beyond workwear and men’s clothing into broader middle-class use. Estimates commonly cited for the U.S. show ready-made production rising from about one-quarter of garments in the late 1860s to a much larger share by 1890. This shift reflected the combined effects of mechanized sewing, pattern standardization, and growing distribution networks.
