By the mid-to-late 1860s, cage crinolines became narrower and flatter in front, concentrating volume behind. A key transitional support was the crinolette (a half-crinoline), which kept the back fullness while reducing the front and sides. This change made the silhouette less circular and moved fashion toward bustle-based shaping.
Around 1868, museum and fashion history sources describe the diminished cage crinoline falling out of fashion, replaced by supports that emphasized the back of the skirt.
